Obituary for Lorraine Simmer Davis

Lorraine Simmer Davis died peacefully June 25, 2016. She was 94 years old. Lorraine was born August 27, 1921, in Pontiac, Michigan, to Eva and Lloyd B. Smith. She graduated from Pontiac High School and worked at Yellow Cab and Pontiac Bus and Coach. Lorraine was also a Title 1 teacher in the Huron Valley Schools. She loved to sew clothes for her children from printed cotton chicken feed bags. In 1959 she won a sewing contest and was on a TV program called “Lady of Charm”.

Lorraine lived life to the fullest and was willing to try anything. Some of her adventures included repelling down a cliff on her 75th birthday, riding in a hot air balloon, riding a bicycle across the state of Michigan on a group ride (twice in her 70s), playing a charity softball game against retired Detroit Tigers, and building her own Dulcimer, which she played in concerts. Lorraine loved to sing, not only around the house but in church and community choirs. She also loved dancing and was a clogger in a community dance group.

Always an avid traveler, she and her first husband, Walter, traveled to 49 states and much of Canada with their 5 small children. She traveled the world with friends as well, visiting various places, including China, Australia, Europe, Thailand, and the Philippines. Lorraine was a lifelong gardener and in the 50s and 60s she had a roadside vegetable stand where she met many lifelong friends. She enjoyed fishing, jigsaw puzzles, cards and games of all kinds. Her greatest joy however came from spending time with her family.

A woman with a positive attitude, beautiful smile, and sparkly green eyes, Lorraine lived by the motto of never saying anything bad about anyone: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” She was polite and friendly to everyone and had many friends of all ages. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, she was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the wonderful staff at Autumn Ridge of Clarkston which was home to Lorraine. She received excellent care there and so much love. She never felt alone since aides would stop in on their break to give her a kiss or see if she needed anything. She felt a part of the resident community there. Heart to Heart Hospice provided care and personnel during her last months and she looked forward to their visits.

She is survived by her children, Walter (Joyce) Simmer, Jr., Patricia (Michael) Dobosenski, Robert Simmer, and Jeanne (Steve) Ensley, her grandchildren, Christine Dobosenski Fend (David) , Kimberly Dobosenski Crame (Christopher), York Simmer (Kim), Todd Simmer (Meg), Justin Simmer (Nivin), Lorraine Ensley Ubowski (Adam), Drew Simmer, Annalisa Gomez (Klemente), Grant Simmer, and Andrew Ensley (Bernadette), and her great-grandchildren, Christian Fend, Ashley Simmer, Max Simmer, Ava Ubowski, Logan Ubowski, Brady Fend, Benjamin Ensley, Leila Ubowski, Mariam Simmer, Aiden Fend, and Anna Ensley. She is also survived by her sister, Bernadine Allen. Lorraine is preceded in death by her husbands, Walter R. Simmer, Sr. and Robert Davis, her daughter, Mary Russell, her grandson, Gregory Ensley, and her brother, Lloyd E. Smith.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Wednesday, June 29th, 4-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Christ Our Light Catholic Church, 2345 Coolidge, Troy, Thursday, June 30th at 10:30am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10am.

Memorials appreciated to the charity of the donor’s choice.
