Loraine “Sally” Hess of Lathrup Village, died peacefully on March 29, 2020 at Nannie’s Inn in West Bloomfield. Sally was born November 17, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan to Anna (Maksymyk) and Alexander Kotula.

Sally grew up in a large and loving family in Detroit, the eighth of nine children; Rose, Mary, Mickey, John, Edmund, Sophie and Betty. Sally is survived by her youngest brother, Donald (Arlene) Kotula, of Key Largo Florida.

She attended Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church and School in Detroit and Detroit Business/Secretarial School. She used her newly acquired skills to obtain a job at Chrysler where she met her future husband, Frank Hess.

Frank and Sally married in December of 1958 and their first daughter, Barbara, was born the following October. A second daughter, Lisa, arrived 16 months later.

Sally naturally fell into the role of loving mother and wife and full time homemaker. She mastered any task she was presented; cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, wallpapering, painting, crafting. She volunteered in every aspect of her daughter’s lives; scouting, swimming, dance, school, etc. She also continued her stenographer work at home, editing and typing manuscripts for a neighborhood author and anyone else in need of her skills and services.

Sally went back to work full time for the State of Michigan when her daughters entered high school. Her last and favorite job was with the DNR. She enjoyed her role as office manager and working with the rangers and public while at Bald Mountain Recreation Area.

The birth of her first grandchild prompted retirement. She and Frank were eager and ready to jump into the role as doting grandparents.

Sally is survived by her loving daughters, Barbara (Tom) Kenez and Lisa (Ron) Bajorek. She is also survived by her adoring grandchildren, Gary and Sara Kenez and Matthew, Jon and Michael Bajorek and many well-loved nieces and nephews.

In her final years, Sally was surrounded in the love and kindness of her caregivers at Nannie’s Inn.

Sally lived a full and blessed life surrounded in love from beginning to end. She surrounded others in love and kindness, a gift we can pay forward in her memory.
