Obituary for Leonard A. Watchowski

Leonard Albin Watchowski died peacefully, Wednesday, August 10, 2011, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was 87 years old. Mr. Watchowski was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 7, 1924, the son of Martin and Martina Watchowski. A 1942 graduate of East Detroit High School, he went on to receive degree in Business and Urban Planning from the University of Detroit. Mr. Watchowski also served proudly in the United States Army Air Corps during the Second World War.

A resident of the Birmingham / Bloomfield area in recent years, upon retirement, Mr. Watchowski spent much time in Sand Point (near Caseville) as well as Marco Island, Florida. Professionally, he was the former city manager for Lathrup Village, Roseville, and Hazel Park. He finished his career as an urban planner for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, wherein he facilitated the redevelopment of many communities in metro-Detroit. Mr. Watchowski was also an active entrepreneur throughout his life, working to build and develop both residential and commercial properties.

A dedicated civil servant, Mr. Watchowski was a past-President of Kiwanis Number 1 Club, Detroit. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus, the Lions Club, Rotary International, and the Council on Aging and Reading for the Blind. Furthermore, Mr. Watchowski was founder of the Caseville, Michigan Historical Society, whose mission is to document the history of the Michigan �thumb� area and save historic structures throughout the region.

A devoted husband of 64 years, a loving father, and cherished grandfather, Mr. Watchowski will be remembered best as a man who lived for others. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Mr. Watchowski is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Merrie, and his children, Dale (Randi Williams) Watchowski and Paula (Charles) Darany. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Elizabeth Watchowski and Caroline, Alison, and Olivia Darany, as well as his brother Donald (Mary) Watchowski. Mr. Watchowski is preceded in death by 5 siblings.

Visitation will take place at at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Road), Thursday 4-8 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Catholic Church, 630 Harmon, Birmingham, Friday 12 Noon. Friends may visit at church beginning at 11:30 am.

Interment will take place in Ubly Valley Cemetery, near Caseville.

Memorials appreciated to Caseville Historical Society or St. Jude Children�s Research Hospital.
