Obituary for LaVerne M. Dallmann

LaVerne M. Dallmann, of Troy, died suddenly August 20, 2012. She was 65 years old. LaVerne was born November 21, 1946, in Oak Park, Illinois, to Bernice (nee Fromm) and Werner Voigt.

LaVerne grew up in Itasca, Illinois, and attended Walther Lutheran High School, where she met Paul Dallmann. High school sweethearts, LaVerne and Paul have been inseparable since 1963. Both went on to attend Valparaiso University. They married in 1969 and moved to metro Detroit.

LaVernes greatest legacy is the love she had for her family. She stayed at home with her girls for their childhood as an active, involved mom, while working part time at the Birmingham YMCA teaching swimming and gymnastics classes. Throughout her life, she strove daily to spend time with the family she and Paul established. Be it through phone calls, visits or play-dates, LaVerne created memories that her family will always cherish.

LaVerne was an educator for over 29 years, teaching Home Economics, Foods, Health, Physical Education, Sewing, Child Development, and Independent Living.

She began her career in 1968 at Oak Park High School teaching Physical Education, serving there for eight years. Once she decided her family was ready, she went back to work as a classroom teacher teaching for eight years at Lutheran High School Northwest, starting in 1987 and for thirteen years at Lutheran High School North, beginning in 1994.

In addition to teaching, she spent countless hours after school mentoring young people as their coach. LaVerne coached high school volleyball for 20 years, at both Lutheran High School Northwest (taking one team to State Finals) and Lutheran High School North. She also coached diving, swimming, synchronized swimming, gymnastics, and cheerleading at Oak Park High School.

LaVerne was a devoted member of Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Birmingham for 42 years, active in the Mary Martha Circle, Altar Guild, and numerous Bible study groups. She served Our Shepherd Lutheran School as a PTO parent, Girl Scout Leader for over 10 years, room mother, and chaperone.

She was also active at Faith Lutheran Church in Troy, where two of her daughters attend. She served as a mentor mom for Faiths Moms Cafe, in which she used her mothering, coaching and classroom experience to mentor new and younger moms in the struggles of early motherhood.

LaVerne was loved by all those who were blessed to have known her.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 43 years, Paul, and her daughters, Lori (Matt) Freeman, Lisa (Andy) Priestap, and Lynne Dallmann. She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren, her sister, Linda (Wayne) Lea, her brother, Lee (Kathie) Voigt, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.), Thursday 4-8pm and Friday 2-8pm. Funeral at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2225 E. Fourteen Mile Road, Birmingham, Saturday 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10am.

Burial will take place in White Chapel Cemetery, Troy.

Her family asks that donations be sent to Our Shepherd Lutheran School A.S.S.I.S.T. Fund to financially assist children wishing to attend Our Shepherd Lutheran grade school, or to the Lutheran High School Association (Scholarships for Lutheran High School North).
