Obituary for Kevin J. Gleeson

Kevin J. Gleeson, a resident of Troy, Michigan passed away on September 16, 2021 from a long and courageous battle with cancer. A resident of Troy, Kevin was born in Detroit, Michigan and remained a Michigander for all of his life but relished the brilliant sun of Florida and the snowy cold of Colorado. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle, friend, Law partner, civic volunteer, sports enthusiast and amateur historian.

He is survived by Lisa K. Gleeson (neé Fiesselmann), his wife of 42years, and son Brendan M. Gleeson (Guadalupe Palacios) his sister Kathleen Elliott (neé Gleeson), her husband Chuck and children Michael (Bridget), Shaena, and Courtney, his sister-in-law Cheryl Gleeson and her children Michael (Chiao-ih) and Kelly, great- nephews Kyeran and Aldyn, his sisters-in-law and their families, many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Michael and Helen (Rogers) Gleeson and brother Michael Gleeson.
Gleeson was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School (Redford) and graduated with a B.A. from Oakland University in Rochester (1973) and received his Juris Doctor from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing (1979). He was called to the Bar of Michigan (1979), and was admitted to the Bar of Illinois (2009) and New York (2014).

Gleeson was a Senior Partner, a member of the Executive Committee, and a member of the Board of Directors of the law firm of Sullivan, Ward, Patton, Gleeson & Felty, P.C., headquartered in Southfield. Gleeson specialized in Liability Defense in ADA Building Compliance, ADR Services, Building Trades, and Engineering, plus Engineering, Architectural, and Construction Litigation. With over 40 years of experience, Gleeson was recognized by the American College of Trial Lawyers, Construction Lawyers Society of America (CSLA), Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers. He was named a Top 100 Lawyer in Michigan and awarded Best Lawyer/Lawyer of the Year for Construction in 2013 and Best Lawyer/ Lawyer of the Year for Litigation/Construction in Detroit in 2015. Gleeson was also a frequent presenter to professionals in the construction industry, and served as a mediator and arbitrator for national disputes.

Throughout his distinguished career, Gleeson vigorously defended claims involving many high-profile construction cases around the country. In Michigan, those cases included: The Ford Field stadium project, the Comerica Park baseball stadium, the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt. Pleasant, the Bluewater Bridge and the Delta Airport Terminal. He was honored to be a Professional Affiliate Member of the American Institute of Architects of Michigan and affiliated with the American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan. In addition to being a tenacious litigator who consistently and zealously advocated for the best interests of his clients, Gleeson was respected among his peers as well as his adversaries. Because of his well-deserved reputation in the construction litigation community and entire legal industry, Gleeson’s legal prowess extended to serving as a recognized mediator and arbitrator in complex commercial and construction litigator cases. In this capacity, and for many years, he was proud to be affiliated with the American Arbitration Association (AAA), and serve as a chosen panelist from the AAA’s Construction Forum Panel of Arbitrators (Complex Claims).

Beside his devotion to his family, his church and to the Law, Gleeson was avid runner and competed annually in the Chicago Marathon. Gleeson was also a proficient skier and worked closely with client ski resorts to assess the capability of rescue and first aid operations, and Ski Patrol safety. He had started learning to fly fish recently, and could not wait to get back to the river. Gleeson sat on the Advisory Board for the Business Department of Oakland University.

A World War II buff, Gleeson keenly studied the planning and execution of each battle. He was a voracious reader and loved documentaries and Hollywood movies alike. Gleeson was particularly adept at getting WWII veterans to tell him their personal stories, much to the gratitude of families whose loved ones would never talk about their horrendous experiences.
