Obituary for Kathryn J. Winslow

Kathryn J. Winslow died peacefully at home August 6, 2017. She was 93 years old. Kathryn was born October 29, 1923, in Detroit to Elizabeth (nee Bowles) and Walter Taylor.

A woman of many interests and talents, Kathryn enjoyed golf and bowling (she bowled a 286 well into her 80s). As a young woman, she was an avid skater, both ice and roller. She loved making short skating skirts that would swing out as she twirled. Throughout her life, she was a devoted Catholic and sang in the church choir for many years. She supported Right to Life and volunteered for Hospice and Meals On Wheels. An avid student, she taught herself shorthand and practiced for many hours filling dozens of steno pads until she perfected the skill.
She also taught herself piano and how to read music and she played beautifully.

Later in life, she went back to school to become a Certified Nursing Assistant and filled many notebooks with medical terms, which she memorized. In her spare time, she loved to knit and crochet and all her children and grandchildren have received Afghans made with her hands. Beginning in the mid-1960s, she kept a daily journal of all of the family’s events and activities; her last entry was May 29, 2016. She was a great cook and the hardest thing for her to do was to surrender her kitchen when she could no longer manage it. A devoted wife, she never stopped trying to train Jay to take off her shoes. She was proud of her home, which she kept meticulous, and she was no doubt the ballast for her entire family. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by many.

Kathryn is survived by her beloved husband of 75 years, Jay Winslow and children, Doug (Linda) Winslow, Mary Lynn (Tom) Shindorf, Diane (Gery) Hanser, Jack (Natalie) Winslow, and Nancy (Bart) Malencia. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, sister, Mary (Jim) Barton and sister-in-law, Nancy Taylor.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.), Wednesday, August 9th, 3-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, 581 E. 14 Mile Road, Clawson, Thursday, August 10th at 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10:30am. Burial will follow in White Chapel Cemetery, Troy.

Memorials appreciated to Heart to Heart Hospice, 30800 Telegraph Rd #1850, Bingham Farms, Michigan 48025.
