Obituary for Kaaren Lee Peters

Kaaren Lee (Henderson) Peters of Birmingham, Michigan died July 9, 2018. She was 74 years old. Kaaren was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by her parents, Isabelle (Patton) and David Henderson.

Kaaren was proud of her Scottish ancestry, where her father immigrated from as a young child. She attended the College of Wooster in Ohio, and the University of Pittsburgh for graduate school, earning degrees in Art and English Literature. She taught high school in the Pittsburgh area for several years, then moved to Walled Lake, Michigan where she raised her two daughters. After retiring as an HR training manager from Blue Cross Blue Shield in Detroit, she moved to Birmingham, Michigan and spent her time volunteering at Gilda's Club, the Detroit Zoo, and in the Pontiac public schools tutoring elementary students. She also earned an Art Therapy degree from Wayne State University while in her late 60s.

She enjoyed music, flowers, gardening, nature, traveling, photography, reading a good mystery, sitting at the beach, watching her grandchildren play, drinking strong coffee in the mornings and relaxing with a glass of red wine in the evenings. She often shared many happy childhood memories of time spent with her cousins and sisters in Kecksburg, PA and Cape Cod, MA.

Kaaren was a gifted artist in sculpture, sketching, oil and acrylic paints. Steven Colbert made her laugh and she wasn't shy about voicing her opinions in regard to politics. She was a deep, intuitive thinker with a big heart. Anyone who knew her would agree she was a free spirit.

She always showed her pride and love for her daughters and grandkids. Kaaren thoroughly enjoyed her weekly lunches with friends after church service at Birmingham Unitarian Church. We can all feel comforted that she was very happy and fulfilled in her final days.

Kaaren is survived by her loving daughters, Jill (Gary) and Kellie (Jason). She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Thomas, Hannah, Ava and Lila, her dear sister, Dona (William) Trull and brother-in-law Dale Bizub, and her nieces and nephews, Cortney (Marc), Jason (Langdon), Diana (Craig), Nadine (Luke), and Christina (Matthew) and many cousins in Colorado and California. She loved keeping up with them on social media as their families grew. Kaaren is preceded in death by her parents, Isabelle and David and her dear younger sister, Gail Bizub.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home 1368 N. Crooks Road, Clawson (Between 14 & 15 Mile Roads) on Tuesday, July 17 from 3 - 8 pm.

A Memorial Service will be held at Birmingham Unitarian Church 38651 Woodward Avenue, Bloomfield Hills on Saturday, July 28th at 11 am.
