John Stanley Mansfield of Troy passed from this world the evening of June 9, 2020. He was 90 years old. John is survived by his brother Edmund Moroz (Margaret) and his son Jody (Tameshia). He is also survived by his granddaughter Elise Mae. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Virginia. He focused his life on family and education.
He was born in Springfield, Illinois, on December 18, 1929 to Zygmont and Helen Moroz. Shortly thereafter he was adopted by his half-sister Genevieve and her husband John Joseph Mansfield. After graduating from St. Leo High School and working briefly for Chrysler in Detroit, he served in the United States Air Force until 1955. Honorably discharged, John returned to Detroit to attend Wayne State University graduating with a B.S. in 1960. He persisted until he achieved a Master’s Degree in Education as well as an MSLS. After completing his graduate studies John worked as a Media Specialist at Lamphere High School for a several years until hiring on with Michigan Bell (eventually AT&T) as a corporate trainer. Ultimately, however, John returned to the public schools he loved working in Detroit first at Southeastern High and finally retiring from Cody High School at 71 years.
John enjoyed a range of intricate, technical hobbies: He pursued photography developing his own pictures and slides, he amassed a collection of Japanese stamps and from his youth he built professional quality paper and stick airplane models. He read the Wall Street Journal daily and loved trading on the stock market. But most of all John was a social person his entire life someone who easily started conversations with complete strangers. Along with wife Virginia he joined the Metro Detroit Gilda’s Club in 2000 the pair performing regularly for years with the Gilda Radner Cancer Support Singers.
