John Russell “Russ” Gnau, III died October 14, 2017 at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was 61 years old. Russ was born on December 9, 1955 in Detroit to parents, Margaret (nee Maher) and John R. Gnau, Jr.

Russ graduated from Brother Rice High School in 1974 and continued his education at the University of Michigan until 1976 when he joined the United States Navy and proudly served from 1976 to 1980. Once he returned from his service he attended Lawrence Tech and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1982. In 1985, Russ married the love of his life, Kathleen Maki. The two enjoyed over 30 years of marriage and had two beautiful daughters together.

Russ worked as an entrepreneur and a successful realtor. He was a diehard Michigan football fan and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Russ was a problem solver and a coach to his three girls. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Russ is survived by his beloved wife Kathy and his dear children, Amanda (Colin) Seguin and Kelsey Gnau. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Reagan Seguin, his mother, Margy, his siblings, Katie (Tony) Interdonato, Michael (Linda) Gnau, Midge (Chris) Saint, Julie (Jay) Pulte, and Mary Lynn, and many nieces and nephews. Russ is preceded in death by his father, John R., Jr.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road, Clawson (Between 14 & 15 Mile Roads) Tuesday, October 17, 2017, 3-8pm with a sharing of memories at 7:30pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Catholic Church, 630 Harmon Street, Birmingham, Michigan, Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 10am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 9:30am.
