Obituary for John R. Cullen

John R. Cullen died at his home in Troy, February 26, 2011. He was 85 years old. John was born June 6, 1925, in Detroit, to Olga (nee Lanagan) and Elmer Cullen. He attended St. Theresa High School where he was selected as a Michigan All-State player in three sports, football, basketball, and baseball. John proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. He continued his athletic prowess by making his base's Naval Basketball Team and entertained the troops each evening by competing against other Army, Air force and Marine base teams. "As we took an island in the South Pacific, our team went there and put on a show".

John returned home after winning the war, he attended University of Detroit and was tight-end for the Titans football team. He loved his college football days, Orange Bowl experiences and used his Bachelor of Science Degree from U. of D. to become a teacher. He also obtained a Masters in Education from U. of D. and a Masters in Education Specialist from Wayne State University in 1973.

He coached three different sports at Detroit's St. Charles and Benedictine High Schools, where he was twice named Detroit News Catholic League "Coach of the Year". After teaching and entering administration at Berkley High School, John became assistant principal at East Hills Junior High School, and principal at Bloomfield Hills Junior High, where he retired after 20 years. He was an originator of the progressive "Self Pace" curriculum where students could take progressively harder classes based on capability and achievement to prepare for high school and college.

John and his wife, Dottie spent their retirement years in Harbor Springs on Lake Michigan, or in Northern Florida playing competitive tennis. He loved watching his children and grandchildren grow-up. Being an old coach, you couldn't get him away from his sideline role as a supporting father or grandfather...cheering the next play, shot or pitch.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Dottie, and children, John (Janet) Cullen, Catherine (Dennis) Delaney, and Michael (Amy) Cullen. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Steven, Brad, Alyssa, Catherine, Caroline, Jennifer, Sarah, and Catherine , great-grandchildren, Dominic, Aria, and Keira, and several, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation will take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Friday 3-8pm with a prayer service at 7pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 280 E. Square Lake Road, Troy, Saturday 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10:30am. Interment in Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.

Mass Offerings would be greatly appreciated.
