Obituary for John P. Dutton

John P. Dutton of Kalamazoo died July 1, 2017. He was 90 years old. John was born August 11, 1926 in Detroit to Peter and Amelia Dutton.

John proudly served in the United States Navy in the Pacific during WWII. Following his service to our country, John married Jean Spaulding on November 29, 1947 at St. Theresa Church in Detroit, beginning a life together that would bless them with 8 children, 11 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

John graduated in 1957 from Wayne State University with a Master’s in education and received his specialist degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1971. He began teaching at Willard School in Highland Park and also worked in their recreation department. In 1957, he began teaching for the Fairlane School District and later served as their Superintendent twice. From 1971-1989 he served the Dearborn Public Schools.

During John’s dedicated career he held several leadership positions, including The National Middle School Committee, State Accounting Committee, State Middle Accreditation Committee, Michigan Association of State and Federal Program Specialist, Wayne State University College of Education Alumni and The Board of Directors, Eastern Michigan University Graduate Advisory Committee, and Wayne State University Alumni Board of Directors.

In 1982, John received the Educator of the Year Award from the Michigan Association of State and Federal Program Specialist and the Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel in 2004.

Following John’s retirement, he remains active serving as the Supervisor of Columbia Township and held roles as President of the Van Buren County Chapter and Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the Michigan Assoc. of Retired School Personnel. He also served on the Legislative Committee, the Board of Directors and chaired the State Membership Committee for the MARSP.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, John was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

John is survived by his loving children, Marc (Sandra) Dutton, Paul (Kathleen) Dutton, Neil (Marcia) Bednarczyk, Yvonne (Joe) Ferrara, Joel (Sandy) Dutton, Cary Dutton, John Dutton, and Alan Dutton. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Stephen, Andrew, Evan, Jennifer, Joshua, Manda, Mia, Abram, Meaghan, Caitlyn, and Timothy and great-grandchildren, Kyleigh, Braden, Simon, Amelia, Donnie, Dennon, Willow, Washington, Dinah, Piet, Rebecca, Olivia, and Eugene. John is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean Dutton, and brother, Harry (Elaine) Dutton.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Friday, July 7th at 11am. Friends may visit Thursday, July 6th, 3-8pm. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
