Obituary for John Otto Schmidt

John Otto Schmidt, of Troy, formerly of Berkley and Hamburg Twp., died peacefully March 31, 2012. He was 90 years old. Mr. Schmidt was born January 13, 1922, in Detroit, to Janet (nee McLaren) and William Schmidt.

A native of Detroit, Mr. Schmidt served with the United States Army during the Second World War. He spent time in both the European and Pacific Theatres. After the war, he graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor�s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. While at MSU, he played saxophone in the marching band. He went on to play in local community bands in Plymouth, Novi, Ann Arbor, and Brighton. Professionally, Mr. Schmidt worked at General Motors, where he served as an industrial engineer for 25 years until his retirement in 1979. He also spent time with Ford and Chrysler. In his spare time, Mr. Schmidt was an avid and accomplished golfer. He even served as captain of the GM golf team. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, John Schmidt was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy, his children, Max Holly and Kathryn (Jerry) Harper, 5 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Walter Kamasis and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will take place at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2225 E. 14 Mile Road, Birmingham, Tuesday 11am.
