Obituary for John L. Telck

John Louis Telck, age 75, passed away on June 29, 2020, in his Detroit home surrounded by family. John, or “Johnny” to his childhood friends, attended St. Dominick’s Elementary School, graduated from Visitation High School (’62), and studied at Wayne State University.

John honorably served his country from 1967 to 1970, including active combat service in Vietnam, where he earned a Vietnam service medal with four bronze stars. He served the City of Detroit for 25 years, first as an EMT, and then as a Fire/EMS Dispatcher.

John loved cars, sports, and all things Detroit, especially the Woodward Dream Cruise, Detroit Tigers, and Detroit Red Wings. He never missed yelling at the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, and he will be fondly remembered carrying around his radio all summer, including several weddings, listening to the Tigers. He enjoyed reading, writing, crossword puzzles, and talking about music, sports, movies, and politics.

John is preceded by his parents, Louis and Virginia Telck and his sister Rose Mary Telck. To his surviving family, John was loving husband to Kathryn (O’Connor) for 42 years, dear father to Barbara Meskin (Ross), Richard Telck, Rebecca Alexander (Scott) and Kristina Gardner (Jordan), and beloved “Papa John” to Allyson, Brayden, Caleb, Evelyn, Gabriella, and Austin.

John will lie instate at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Farmington from 9am to 10am on July 6, funeral mass to follow immediately after. John will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery with military honors on July 7 at 1pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the PKD Foundation may be sent in John Telck’s name at The family would like to express thanks for the unexpected lights and sirens “salute” provided by Detroit EMS, Detroit Fire, and Detroit Police departments.
