Obituary for John F. McDonnell

John F. McDonnell of Bloomfield Twp., died January 31, 2011, in Troy. He was 90 years old. John was born March 15, 1920, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Matilda (nee Ehrenreich) and John P. McDonnell.

John lived in Kansas City for his first 50 years, and there graduated from Rockhurst High School, attended Rockhurst University and married Betty, his beloved partner for 63 years. They moved to Michigan in 1970.

A man with a keen mind, blazing smile and generous heart, he passed the rigorous CPA exam on his first try and rose to become a partner with Deloitte, where he managed audits for a number of major companies.

He loved music, gardens and working with his hands. His family loved him as a humble, courtly man who thought always of others needs before his own. He was devoted to his family, his Catholic faith and his work. When his children needed him to calculate taxes, paint a bathroom or mend a broken heart he was there. To his grandchildren, he was Papa Choo-Choo, always game for ice cream, bowling and running the model train in the basement.

He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and the Missouri and Michigan CPA societies. He volunteered his accounting expertise extensively for the United Way, Marygrove College and Heartline in Detroit, which is now a part of Lutheran Social Service.

John was preceded in death by his mother and father, Matilda and John C. McDonnell; his sister, Dorothy Mueller; his son Patrick and his grandson Peter.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Betty, his brother, Jim McDonnell of Front Royal, Va.; his grateful and grieving children John (Rosalia) McDonnell of Seattle, Lynda McDonnell (Steve Brandt) of Minneapolis, Janet McDonnell of Alexandria, Va., Sue McDonnell of Peru, N.Y., and Mary Beth (Bill) Weiss of Catonsville, Md., his daughter-in-law Nettie McDonnell of Libertyville, Il., 12 grandchildren: Ben (Shamala Mary) Brandt, Micheal (Lindsay Turner)Brandt; Sean, Melissa and Kathleen McDonnell; Matthew, Kyler and Nathan Kennedy; and Christian, Jacob, Joey and Emma Weiss, and great-grandson, Gabriel Brandt.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Friday 4-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Regis Catholic Church, Lahser at Lincoln, Bloomfield Hills, Saturday 10:30am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10am.

Johns family thanks the people who provided loving, respectful care for the past 10 months.

Memorials may be made to Manresa Jesuit Retreat House, 1390 Quarton Road, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan 48304 or the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, 1820 Mt. Elliott Street, Detroit, Michigan 48207.
