Obituary for John E. Courtney

John E. “Jack” Courtney, 89, of Boyne City, Michigan, formerly of Dearborn, died at home January 27, 2018, following a brief illness, surrounded by his family.

Jack is survived by his wife Pat of 66 years, children, Kate (Jim) Scollin, Mary-Connie (Ed) Blanch, Susie (Jim) Vander Veen, Annie (Rob Wiedemann), John (Luanne) Courtney and Bill (Kate) Courtney, eleven loving grandchildren and spouses, and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Mary Ann Gasser, brother Richard and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was born June 29, 1928 in Chicago to John W. and Marie McErlain Courtney, attended University of Detroit High School, and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1950. Jack served in the US Marine Corp, then continued as a reserve officer until he retired as a Colonel. Meanwhile he pursued a career in automotive sales, retiring in 1993.

Jack was a devoted husband, father, and friend to all. He had a gift for making friends easily, and nurtured his friendships through activities such as Notre Dame football weekends, ski trips, and celebration among family and friends. He was a dedicated Catholic and active participant in parishes throughout his lifetime.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Hugo of the Hills, Stone Chapel, 2215 Opdyke Road, Bloomfield Hills on Saturday February 3rd at 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10:30am.
