Obituary for John R. Hayes

John R. Hayes, a long-time resident of Birmingham, died peacefully at home August 7, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. He was 79 years old. John was born September 23, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan to Margaret (nee Donnolly) and Edward R. Hayes.

John graduated from Birmingham High School and Michigan State University. After a short time in the Air Corps, John spent time working with the Kresge Co. in Texas. He soon returned to Detroit to start a career in finance at the Chrysler Corporation.

In 1966, John married Patricia Marudas and by the fall of 1967, they had started their family of three girls: Muffy, Kelly, and JP. John, alongside Pat, coached the girls in softball, taught them tennis and golf, and would cheer them on in a variety of sports. After he retired from Chrysler he became active in the Birmingham Senior Men’s Club, as well as the Bereavement Committee and Food Pantry Team at Holy Name Parish. Even in declining health, John remained active and faithful in his parish and community.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 7, 2016, these challenges became too great and John took his final breath and joined the communion of saints. With one breath, a wonderful Spartan tailgate kicked-off in Heaven. A devoted husband, father, brother, coach, neighbor, and friend, John Hayes was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by all.

John is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Pat Hayes (nee Marudas), and his loving daughters, Muffy (Rob) Patterson, Kelly Hayes, and JP Hayes. He is preceded in death by his dear siblings, Margaret McGinty and Vincent Hayes.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Rd., (between 14-15 Mile Rds.), Thursday 4-8pm. Rosary 7pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Catholic Church, 630 Harmon Street, Birmingham, Friday 10am. Friends may visit beginning at 9:30am.

Memorials appreciated to Holy Name Catholic Church, 630 Harmon Street, Birmingham, Michigan 48009 or Manresa Jesuit Retreat House, 1390 Quarton Road, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan 48013.
