Obituary for Joan P. Donohue

Joan Patricia Donohue of Bloomfield Hills, died September 28, 2010, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac after a courageous battle with cancer. Joan, 76, was born in Detroit on July 5, 1934 to Patricia and Michael Elias. She graduated from Dominican High School in Detroit in 1952. Joan began working at Edward Rose and Sons Building Company, were she met D. Jerome (Jerry) Donohue. They soon fell in love and were married on April 7, 1956, at St. Veronicas Catholic Church.

On their 1st wedding anniversary, Joan and Jerry were blessed with the first of their three children. They raised their family in Birmingham, where neighbors became life long friends. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, her greatest joy came from spending time with her family. Her love for her family was never ending and all forgiving. Each child, grandchild and great grandchild shared a deep personal relationship with her. This relationship is the foundation of their life.

Joan had a strong faith and a passion for Catholic values. Over 30 years ago, Joan's walk with Christ intensified under Father Dan Havron's guidance at Duns Scotus School of Evangelization, where she was called to evangelize and where she also met her life long spiritual friends. As a faithful servant, she was instrumental in coordinating religious conferences, retreats, healing ministries, parish ministries and local prayer groups. Joan became involved in political issues in support of the rights of God's most precious unborn. For the past 12 years, Joan worked at Saint Hugo's Rectory, assisting the priests. In her lovely way, Joan became their right hand person and a spiritual friend to many of them.

Joan was an amazing woman. Her faith provided her with perseverance and courage in the lighter joyful times as well as life's more challenging times. Even as she battled cancer, she was always there to comfort others and pray for them. Joan was a generous, gentle, fun-loving, artistic spirit with a wonderful sense of humor. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by all who were blessed to be in her life.

Joan is survived by her children, Daniel J. (Virginia) Donohue, Michelle (Tony) Mannarino and Maureen Klein. Grandchildren include Brandon Ratliff, Christopher & Megan Donohue, Hailey, Hannah and Alexa Klein, and step-granddaughters Dawn and Megan Mannarino. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Blake and Raquel Ratliff and siblings Pat Littlefield and Michael Elias. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, D. Jerome Donohue and sister, Nancy McIntyre.

Visitation will take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14&15 Mile Road) Sunday 2-8pm. Prayers Sunday 7pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Hugo of the Hills Stone Chapel, 2215 Opdyke Road, Bloomfield Hills, Monday 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10am. Interment in Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.

Memorials may be made to Right to Life of Michigan, 2340 Porter Street, SW, P.O. Box 901, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49509 or Mass Offerings in Joans name.
