Obituary for Joan M. Curran

Joan (nee Roach) Curran passed away surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, May 17, 2020. She was 88 years old. Joan passed at approximately 4:30PM, surely knowing she had a great party waiting for her in heaven given by her many family and friends who had gone before her.

Joan was born on January 17, 1932 in Detroit. She grew up in a house of love and laughter led by her parents Ralph and Irene Roach. Joan was the only girl in a household of 3 boys. She was a definite tomboy, but also always loved dressing up in her finest. She loved the outdoors and sports, and excelled at skiing in particular, spending many weekends at Boyne Mountain, and several months in Aspen, Colorado.

She attended Gesu Catholic School and Immaculata Catholic High School. She went on to work as an administrative assistant for Time Life, mostly so she could pay for skiing, a trip abroad, and the latest fashion from Hudsons or Saks Fifth Avenue downtown department stores.

Her greatest adventure began when she started dating the handsome Irishman Dan Curran. They quickly wed and had 4 beautiful children. Joan taught all of her kids how to ski, how to eat right, and most important of all, how to enjoy life and thank God for your blessings.

From raising her kids in the “Catholic Ghetto” to summers spent at Torch Lake, Joan was always ready for fun with family and friends. She was also a huge sports fan, cheering on especially all University of Detroit Jesuit High teams, the Tigers, Notre Dame, all Jesuit college basketball teams, and MSU whenever Cassisus Winston was playing. Joan’s family finds comfort knowing that she is in a better place now, where the Tigers always win, Frank Sinatra is playing live at the Sands, and the diamonds on Torch Lake glisten ever brighter. She will be greatly missed.

Joan is survived by her 4 children, Kathleen Curran, Dan (Megan) Curran, Molly (Matthew) Mistor, and Michael (Jane) Curran, 4 grandchildren Danny Curran, Patrick Curran, Vincent Curran, and Mary Frances Curran, brother Tom (Barbara) Roach, sister-in-law Mary (Lawrence) MacLean, brother-in-law Ted (Deirdre) Mueller, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Dan Curran, and brothers Jim and Jack Roach.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Regis Catholic Church, 3695 Lincoln Drive, Bloomfield Hills, Wednesday, May 20th at 10am. Private burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.

In lieu of flowers, please donate in memory of Joan Curran to the University of Detroit Jesuit Scholarship Fund and/or Mission Keep the Faith Bolivia,
