Obituary for Janice Keller Howells

Janice Keller Howells died peacefully February 28, 2020. She was 90 years old. Mrs. Howells was born February 18, 1930, in Petersburg, Michigan to Gladys Mae (nee Elder) and Albin Hoffman.

Janice was a pillar of the community, loving and serving in every way imaginable her family, neighbors and the city she lived in for 65 years. She was a true “doer”; the kind of person who raised her hand in the time of need. She spent countless volunteer hours enhancing the lives of others as PTA president, Royal Oak School Board member, Girl Scout leader, and active member of the First United Methodist Church in Ferndale where she was recently acknowledged as one of the church’s “Volunteer Unsung Heroes”.

In the last months of her life she sold Christmas trees in freezing temperatures to benefit the parish. She appreciated her wonderful neighbors who helped her in times of need. Her interests included collecting antiques and gardening, which was evident in the warm and welcoming aura of her home. She had a lifelong eagerness to learn and think and challenge. She did crossword puzzles, read novels and watched the news until her final day. Janice was a sports fan who cheered on the Spartans and the Tigers, and became a vocal booster for any activity that her family participated in. She was creative, original and genuine as evidenced by her brightly colored wardrobe and the jewelry she wore. She celebrated her 90th birthday with the family she cherished and advocated for, providing a final loving opportunity to make memories and to share in the fellowship and camaraderie that she was always creating. Janice inspired in her words, thoughts and deeds, and the ways that she will be missed by her family and her community are immeasurable.

She was the beloved and devoted wife of the late Bruce Keller, then the late Albert Howells. Loving mother of Kevin (Julia) Keller, Todd (Jacqueline) Keller, Gail (Jerome) Bindi, Jennifer (Patrick) Moore and stepson Greg (Kathy) Howells. Dearest grandmother of Audrey, Vanessa, Thomas, Emily, John, Adam, Kyle, Cameron, Brett and Bryce. Caring great-grandmother of Hannah, Hailey, Hayden, Avery, Lily, Sophia, Gavin, Carson and Madison. Dear sister of Jeanne Phillips.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Roads), Clawson, Monday, March 2, 3-8pm. A Funeral Service will take place at Ferndale First United Methodist Church, 22331 Woodward Avenue, Ferndale, Tuesday, March 3, 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10:30am.

Burial will take place in Oakview Cemetery, Royal Oak.

Memorials appreciated to Ferndale First United Methodist Church.
