Obituary for James Grady

James Edward Grady, Sr., 82, died on April 1, 2020 in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Jim was born in Quincy, MA on June 11, 1937 to the late Frank and Mary Grady. He graduated from A.G. Parrish High School in Selma, AL and went on to attend Auburn University where he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering. He married Irene (Delikat) Grady on June 6, 1964 in Wilmington, DE, a day Jim lovingly referred to often as his own D-Day.

Jim spent decades working in the auto industry. His career with DuPont Corp and Ciba-Geigy took him to Wilbraham, MA where he was to earn an MBA from Western New England College and eventually to Bloomfield Hills, MI where cars became his passion both professionally and personally. He specialized in color pigments, served on the board of the Detroit Color Council and acquired an encyclopedic knowledge of classic cars. At the end of his career he was able to share his expertise with Flex Products (now Viavi Solutions) out of California allowing them to launch a line of color shifting pigments.

In retirement Jim kept busy working as a ranger for several local golf courses where he could be seen wearing the orange and blue of his beloved Auburn Tigers and shouting “War Eagle!” to anyone who sported the same. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, ushered at the Holy Name Catholic Church and served as the chairman of the Bloomfield Township Election Committee. He enjoyed vacationing in Myrtle Beach, SC with his family where he was able to further hone his golfing prowess and “War Eagle!” shouting skills.

He is survived by his wife Irene, sister Virginia Feeney, son James Grady, Jr. and spouse Stacey and granddaughter Autumn of Cleveland, OH, son Dr. Michael Grady and spouse Dr. Ellen Grimm of Buda, TX and daughter Maureen Grady and spouse Curt Hamilton of Ann Arbor, MI.
