Obituary for Hugh C. Ross

Hugh C. Ross

7/15/1929 – 2/19/2021

Preceded in death by his wife Roberta (Bobbie) after 66 years of marriage.

Father of four; Tim (Kelley), Linda (Jared), Betsy (Charles), and Diane (Richard)

Grandfather of 10; Tim Jr., Lindsey, Caroline, Jared Jr., Thomas, Alex, Emily, Ricky, Robby, and Andrew

Great grandfather of Kate and Eleanor

Hugh attended Hillsdale College and later earned his law degree from the University of Detroit. Not long after graduation Hugh joined the Ed Rose building company. The Rose brothers established Advance Mortgage Corporation where Hugh began a mortgage banking career in which he remained active for more than 60 years. Hugh was a participative member of the Mortgage Bankers Association of Michigan and served as its President in 1971. In 1983 he and son Tim formed Ross Mortgage Corporation. From a single office start up Ross grew to become a full service multi branch, multi state mortgage banking company establishing the name as one of the most respected in the industry.

Hugh was a man of many interests. Annual family ski trips first to Canada and then to Colorado were enjoyed by all for many years. A lifelong love of spending time on the water lead him to his passion for sailing. Hugh successfully campaigned Odyssey, a 35’ sloop, in fourteen annual Port Huron to Mackinac sailboat races until he earned the coveted “Boat of the Year” award in 1992. His sense of adventure is best represented through river rafting voyages in North and South America, Africa, and Asia. Hugh and Bobbie traveled extensively as members of the Nomads Inc., Travel Club. Through the club they traveled around the world on trips they both enjoyed. During these years and in addition to his many professional contributions Hugh became an avid golfer and further supported his community as a volunteer probation officer for Oakland County.

Hugh leaves a legacy of professional integrity.  His adherence to principles and values such as honesty, honor, dependability, and trustworthiness provided a contribution to people whose professional lives are forever changed because they knew him, to the mortgage banking community, and of course the housing of hundreds of thousands of families in which he played a role.

Hugh’s immediate family will celebrate his life at a private service with a fitting public tribute planned at a future time. Contributions in the name of Hugh Ross may be made to Manresa Jesuit Retreat House at 1390 Quarton Rd, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304
