Obituary for Harold Bill Merrill, Jr.

Harold �Bill� Merrill, Jr. of Grayling, died August 28, 2011, in Sterling Heights. He was 84 years old. Bill was born May 18, 1927, in Springfield, Massachusetts, to Elizabeth (nee Halden) and Harold Merrill.

Bill proudly served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. He attended the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and received his Masters Degree from the University of Minnesota. Bill was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.

Bill married Frances �Fran� Kretschmar on August 26, 1950 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. They enjoyed 52 years together until Fran�s death in 2002.

Bill was an avid fly fisherman who tied his own flies. He was a founding member of Michigan Trout Unlimited, a member of The Upper Manistee River Association and the Michigan Fly Fishing Club, as well as a member of Marco Island Flyrodders. Bill traveled extensively and was a great story teller with always a big fish tale to share. Bill was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by many.

Bill is survived by his children, Elizabeth Merrill, Deborah (Glen) Womble, and Douglas (Cheryl) Merrill, 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and sister, Joan (the late Ralph) Harris. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Fran.

Visitation will take place at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Thursday 5-8pm. A Memorial Service will be held at Lynch & Sons, Friday 12noon.
