Obituary for Goldie Tyler Johns

Goldie Earlestine Tyler Johns, passed away peacefully, May 5, 2011, in Madison Heights, MI far from the peaceful little town of Kittrell, N.C. where she was born 88 years ago to the prominent Henderson N.C. photographer, G. H. Tyler, and his wife Bessie Levy Tyler.

Goldie leaves a legacy of love, joie de vivre, and beautiful music that she shared with the world. She always cared deeply for all her large family and seemed to touch every one of them over and over throughout her wonderful life either by letter, telephone, or even with personal visits. Goldie thrived throughout her childhood in Kittrell, especially in music, learning piano from her Mom Bessie, and sang, played, and performed all around the local area in schools, churches, and civic centers. She always loved her homeland of North Carolina and probably felt the depth of family ancestral feeling, of belonging to the land where her people had lived and loved for hundreds of years. When she had gone through the various careers she followed: photography, secretary, nursing, singer, songwriterShe moved back to N.C., briefly in retirement until the death of her husband of 46 years, Samuel H. Johns, Jr., a native Bostonian. Goldie then moved to Englewood, N.J. where she resided with her son Steve until her final visit to Michigan in April 2010.

Goldie was the 5th child born to the Tylers. She was predeceased by brothers George W. Tyler of Fayetteville N.C, James (Jimmy) Tyler of Daytona Beach Fla., Thomas H. Tyler of Malden MA, Hugh M. Tyler of Boston, MA and her sisters, Marie E Yazbak of West Roxbury, MA, and Inez F. Himes of Petersburg, VA. She is survived by her brother Robert W. Tyler and his wife Frances of Burlington MA and by daughters Diane Smith of Boston, MA. Linda Johns Gilyard and her husband Dr. Gary Gilyard of Farmington Hills,Michigan. Her sons, Larry Allen of Boston, MA and his wife, Rebecca, Steve Johns of Englewood N.J. and his wife Debbie Keefe, also survive her.

Goldie is survived by eight grandchildren: Michelle Johnson, Karen (Smith) Forge, Lauren Gilyard, Celeste Gilyard, Shelby Gilyard, Rashaan Allen, Amani Allen, and Daryl Johns. Goldie has two great-grandchildren: Camden Forge, and Soleil Allen.
Many nieces and nephews will cherish memories of Goldie, as will all of her very large extended family and numerous devoted friends, which spread across our dear land and expand to places all over the globe.

A service dedicated to Goldie will be on Thursday, May 12, 11 AM at the church of St. Augustine and St. Martin, Lenox St., Boston, MA. 02118
