Obituary for Geraldine Hoste

Geraldine Hoste died peacefully October 27, 2021. She was 98 years old. Gerry was born in Detroit on August 25, 1923, the only child of Verna Hale.

She grew up during the Depression and learned from an early age to value hard work and thriftiness. She graduated from high school and worked in secretarial jobs. She met and married Joe Hoste in 1949 and they made a very happy marriage for 67 years. She always believed in treating their three children, Susan, Jim and Jane equally and wanted college educations for both daughters as well as their son. Joe and Gerry sacrificed many things to afford tuition at Catholic elementary and high school, a foundation that helped them do well in college and professional life.

Gerry developed many skills as a homemaker, becoming a wonderful cook and baker, and a beautiful seamstress of clothing for herself and the girls. For many years while the children took piano lessons, she helped them develop good habits of practicing the lessons. She was pleased that even as adults they all enjoyed playing instruments and making music an important part of their lives. Gerry and Joe took ballroom dance classes together and had a large group of friends who enjoyed getting together for dance parties and good food and drinks.

When the adult children married and the family grew to include a son-in-law Dennis and daughter-in-law Maureen, Joe and Gerry looked forward to the arrival of grandchildren – Tom, Laura, Dan, Kelly, Ryan and Janie’s family in Denmark – Martin, Lea, Amos and Niels. Gerry has many great-grandchildren: Anthony, Isaac, Damien, Zachary, Chloe and Alex. In Denmark there are 8 more: August, Johannes, Smilla, Frederik, Lauge, Eydstein, Thor, and Gudrun.

Joe and Gerry made their home in St. Clair Shores for 60 years and took great pride in caring for the home. It was necessary to adjust to a new life at a senior apartment in American House where they lived for a few years together until Joe’s death in 2016. More recently Gerry moved to Memory Care at Sunrise in Bloomfield where she made some new friends among the residents and staff. Her easy smile and fun personality will be missed by many. For her family who loved her, she leaves us with many happy memories of birthday celebrations and holidays together, an example of wonderful parenting and devoted love in

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anastasia Catholic Church, 4571 John R, Troy, Monday 10am. Friends may visit beginning at 9:30am. Burial will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton Township.

Memorials appreciated to the Capuchins.
