Obituary for Gerald Wilson Scott

Gerald W. Scott, a long-time resident of Royal Oak, Michigan, and most recently of Warren, Michigan, passed away peacefully at his home on November 17, 2012. 86 years old at his death, he was the committed husband of Patricia Carol (ODell), the loving father of Kathy Reid, Lesley Drilich (Terry), Jeffrey Scott, and Robert (Kris) Scott, and the always-kind grandfather to Justin, Jordan, Ashley, Clara, Charlotte and William. Gerald was known for his fine intellect and independent thinking, his love of banter and jokes, his enjoyment of good music of all genres, an appreciation of restaurants and nightclubs, a fascination with model trains, his long, enduring friendships, and his quiet kindness.

Born on October 22, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan, Gerald was the son and only child of Robert Scott (of Dundee, Scotland), a tailor, and Emma Catherine (nee Wertz) of Detroit, Michigan. Gerald was raised in Highland Park, Michigan and attended Highland Park High School, where he met and fell in love with Patricia. After graduating in 1943, Gerald briefly attended Highland Park Junior College and then joined the Army Air Force in the final year of World War II, training to be an aerial camera operator.

Following the war, Gerald married Patricia in 1948, and, using the learning passed on by his tailor father, began a lifelong career in retail clothing in a series of positions at Allens Menswear, Winkelmans, Schiller Millinery and ultimately Kmart Corporation, where he served as director of operations for fashion merchandising and director of marketing for mens and boys wear until his retirement in 1991. Gerald was a champion of women in the workplace, and was successful at identifying and placing many female professionals in important roles previously held only by men.

With the birth of their first child, Gerald and Patricia moved to Royal Oak, Michigan, where they raised their family and resided until 2005.

In his retirement, Gerald focused on helping and celebrating his family, and caring for his life-long love, Patricia.

A visitation with the family from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and a brief memorial service at 1 p.m., are scheduled for Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at Lynch & Sons, 1328 N. Crooks Road, Clawson, Michigan.
