Obituary for Frank P. Winkler

Frank P. Winkler of Birmingham, died December 28, 2019. He was 89 years old. Frank was born February 21, 1930 in Detroit to Georgiana (nee Bauer) and John Winkler.

He served in the Air Force and was also a minor league baseball catcher prior to joining the Detroit Police Force, where he served for almost forty years, rising to the rank of executive lieutenant. His love of baseball continued throughout his life, and he could be found watching as many major league baseball games as possible.

Frank was truly a good and decent man. The difficulty of police work never embittered him. His late son-in-law commented that he never heard Frank utter a curse in all the years he knew him. On his Air Force discharge papers, there’s a line about “honest and faithful service”. Frank’s whole life exemplified this.

Frank is survived by his daughter, Susan Winkler Rokosz, granddaughter, Aleksandra Rokosz Carter and sisters, Barbara Winkler Bednarczyk and Beverly Winkler Amoroso.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Roads), Wednesday, January 1st, 3-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica, Woodward & 12 Mile Road, Thursday, January 2nd at 10am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 9:30am. Burial will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.

Memorials appreciated to PAWS for LEOs, P.O. Box 5206, Buena Vista, Colorado 81211.
