Obituary for Frank Mulford Barnes

Frank Mulford Barnes, age 89, of Bloomfield Township, passed away September 22, 2016, surrounded by his family. The second of four children, Frank was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 23, 1927, to Charles H. and Wilda LaMarsh Barnes. He graduated from Wilbur Wright High School and earned a BS in Geology from the University of Michigan, and a BS in Civil Engineering and MS in Microbiology from Wayne State University. He met his loving wife, Adeline, at St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church at age 4. They married at St. Joseph’s on September 15, 1951, and reared their family in Birmingham, Michigan. Frank was a professional engineer and a partner in Hubbell, Roth and Clark, a widely respected firm that, among other things, engineered numerous roads, bridges, water and sewerage treatment and pollution control facilities.

Frank’s activities were primarily related to his family and church. He was a Boy Scout leader, an Indian guide, and an honorary member of the Girl Scouts of America from whom he and his wife received a “certificate of appreciation” as recognition of “distinguished service” for “their training of leaders in first aid and outdoor program skills, in 1976. Frank was an avid reader and graduate of the Evelyn Wood speed reading course. He was also a graduate of the Fearful Flyers and enjoyed puttering around in the garden. For more than 50 years he was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church where he served as a lay reader, usher and member of the Vestry, taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and played in the golf and bowling leagues. He was also a member of the Stonycroft Hills Golf Club, the Village Club of Bloomfield Hills, and the Senior Men’s Club of Birmingham. He and Adeline traveled extensively throughout Europe with the University of Michigan alumni association.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Adeline, his sister Frances, and brother, William. He is survived by his sister, Janet Hariton, and his three children, Martha Barnes Webb (Jean) and Jane. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Joshua and Alessa (Zac Schell) Geboff.

The memorial of his life will be held December 17 at 2 PM at St. James Episcopal Church, 355 W. Maple Road, Birmingham, MI 48009. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. James Music Fund, the Senior Men’s Club of Birmingham, 380 S. Bates Street, Birmingham, MI 48009 or a charity of your choice.
