Obituary for Frank J. Messing III

Frank J. Messing III died February 28, 2020. He was 91 years old. Frank was born February 21, 1929, in Grosse Pointe Park to Alma (nee Treppa) and Frank J. Messing, Jr. He graduated from U of D High School in 1947, U of D College in 1951, and received his Juris Doctorate Degree from U of D Law School in 1954.

Frank served in the U.S. Army from December 1954 through November 1956, when he was honorably discharged. He was stationed throughout Europe, notably in Austria and Italy.

He married Donna Dolores (Cook) on June 18, 1958, and remained married to her for 55 years until her death in December 2013. He lived in Harper Woods from 1958 to 1967, Southfield from 1967 to 1988, and then Franklin from 1988 until his death.

Frank worked for Lincoln Mutual Casualty Company from 1957 until his retirement in 1994, serving as company president from 1983 to 1994.

He was an avid athlete most of his life, and particularly enjoyed tennis and basketball. He played football and basketball for UD High School (team MVP in basketball in 1947), and he coached basketball at St. Clare of Montefalco in Grosse Pointe Park. He was an active member of St. Bede Parish in Southfield from 1967 until 1988, and then a member of St. Owen Parish in Bloomfield Hills from 1988 until his death.

After his retirement in 1994, he enjoyed traveling throughout the world with Donna and spending winters together in Destin, Florida.

What he enjoyed the most was spending time with his family (wife, children, and grandchildren), especially at the family cottage on Lake Huron in Oscoda. Also, every March for the past 15 years he took great enjoyment in submitting a bracket and competing with extended family in the family’s annual NCAA March Madness basketball tournament pool (organized by grandson Colin), and he took great pride in holding the distinction of placing in the top three more often than any other family member.

Frank is survived by children, Doug (Sandy) Messing, Kari (Terry) Conrad, Dan (Danette) Messing, and Amy (Peter) Nuttall and grandchildren, Colin, Christopher (Karine), Jeremy (Maria), Jacob (Dakota), Peter, Travis, Kasey, Emily, Katie, Lucas, Natalie, and Josh and 1 great-grandson on the way. He is also survived by his brother, Donald Messing and sister, Sister Alma Marie Messing.

Due to the current health advisories, a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date at Church of St. Owen, 6869 Franklin, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Memorials appreciated to Capuchin Monastery.
