Obituary for Frances R. Smeak

Frances R. Smeak died peacefully from natural causes on April 3, 2020. She was surrounded by family and loved ones during her final moments. Fran was 93 years old; she was born June 17, 1926 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Fran and her late husband, Carroll David Smeak II, were married May 12, 1951. They enjoyed 51 years together raising their family of five children, cooking together, entertaining their friends, participating in their grandchildren's lives, and traveling the world. She was a big fan and supporter of her grandsons’ football games; rain or shine she would be at all of their games. They were members of the Nomads Travel Club which took them to many fascinating places and adventures around the globe from Alaska, to Africa and Egypt. She enjoyed life in Birmingham, Michigan for over 55 years, 38 of those years with her husband.

Fran led her life volunteering and giving of herself. She had a unique way of giving encouragement and always being supportive even if the choices that her children or spouse made were different from her own. She had such a caring and compassionate personality for whoever she knew or recently met. God blessed us with a perfect role model to exemplify Christ in all she did; for her husband and family, for Community Bible Study as Core Leader, for BSLC Birthday Club, for BSLC Bible study, with Steven Ministry, SJMH-Pontiac nurse’s aide volunteer, Girl Scout Troop leader - just to mention a few. Fran was the personification of grace. She unconditionally loved and respected all who knew her.

She is survived by her 5 children, David Smeak (Kathleen), Douglas Smeak (Suzanne), Daniel Smeak (Kimberly), Joanne Smeak, and Jenny Smeak Cherocci (Jim), and her 12 grandchildren, Daniel Smeak (Debra), Jessica Smeak Olsen, Matthew Smeak, Cameron Smeak (Dahlia), Amanda Scott (Cameron), Delaney Smeak, Tyler Smeak, Jason Smeak (Rachel), Samantha Smeak (fiancé Patrick Sullivan), Zachary Cherocci, Justin Cherocci, Lucas Cherocci, and her 9 great grandchildren Izabella Smeak, Elijah Smeak, Judah Smeak, Callidora Smeak, George Olsen, Austin Smeak, Addison Scott, Charlie Smeak, Annika Smeak and her sister Catherine Ritchey Garcia. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll, her brother Jim Ritchey, and her parents, Alfred Calhoun Ritchey and Eleanor Marianne (Suydam) Ritchey.

She leaves an enormous hole in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Thus, in keeping with the restrictions in place at this time for the health and safety of our community, a private funeral was held at Lynch & Sons funeral home and her burial was held at the White Chapel cemetery on Saturday April 4, 2020 with immediate family only. The family is planning a celebration of life at a later date in the summer when conditions allow for larger gatherings.
