Obituary for Florence R. Merz

Florence Ruth Merz (nee Fleer), of Bloomfield Township, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2021. She is survived by her children, Carol Sim-Campbell (the late Ron Campbell), Robert H. Merz (Susan Schroeter), Lisa Toenniges (Jeff), and Jim Merz (Alice), as well as seven grandchildren. Florence is predeceased by her husband Robert (Bob) A. Merz, her parents Ruth and Henry Fleer, and her brother Robert H. Fleer.

Florence was born November 29, 1930, in Brooklyn, New York. She graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and studied home economics at Pratt Institute. She met Bob while working as a traveling sales rep for The Talon Zipper Company. They were married in Brooklyn in 1953. Together they moved around the country while Bob was working for General Motors, living in Minneapolis, Chicago, and Portland, before returning to the Bloomfield Township area in 1972.

Florence loved to cook and entertain, preparing gourmet meals for family and friends. She was also an avid bridge player and did quite a bit of sewing. She worked for 13 years as a real estate agent at Cranbrook Realtors with Bob. Florence enjoyed spending a week each summer with her children and grandchildren in Green Lake, Wisconsin. She was a member of Pine Lake Country Club and The Village Club.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the caregivers at Sunrise of Bloomfield.

The immediate family is planning a private memorial in celebration of her life.
