Obituary for Evelyn H. Houser

Evelyn H. Houser, a lifelong resident of the Detroit area, currently of Rochester, died peacefully May 6, 2016. She was 95 years old. Evelyn was born July 1, 1920, in Detroit to Emma (nee Driest) and George Johnson.

Evelyn’s mother always said, “Evelyn was born with a smile on her face”. For those of us who knew her, that certainly fits with her vibrant personality. She was quick-witted and would easily win you over with her beautiful blue eyes, and flashing smile. Evelyn loved life!

She was a patriot, proudly serving in the Signal Corps during the Second World War. Her duties included the transportation of radio equipment. She even drove a tank! Evelyn was extremely proud of her service to her country.

The love of her life was Charlie Houser, and together they comprised what one would call “the dynamic duo.” She was one active lady: enjoying travel and camping with Charlie, walking the beach in Florida, dancing, and bike riding. She was an avid reader and loved her Detroit Red Wings and Tigers.

Evelyn’s daughter, Susan, brought her great joy, and their very close relationship remained an on-going, viable part of her life, even to her death.

Family and friends were the primary focus of Evelyn’s life. Gathering together her daughter, grandsons and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews was her greatest joy. Evelyn made sure the family had fun together, whether it was going on a cruise, taking a day trip to Frankenmuth, or just enjoying a meal or short visit. Her family was truly her greatest joy.

In short, it is almost impossible to think of Evelyn without a smile and a wonderfully warm feeling.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Susan Doyle, and grandsons, Dennis (Mary) Doyle and Michael (Ophelia) Doyle. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Emma, Anna, and Liam Doyle, sister, Virginia (Robert) Vallee, and nieces and nephews. Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Houser, grandson, Jamie Doyle, and brothers, Marvin Johnson, Raymond Johnson, Harold Johnson, and George Johnson.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Monday, May 9th, 4-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anastasia Church, 4571 John R, Troy, Tuesday, May 10th at 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10:30am. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit.
