Obituary for Eugenia C. Florek

Eugenia C. Florek, of Bloomfield Township, died September 7, 2018. She was 98 years old. Eugenia was born March 11, 1920 in Detroit to parents Franciszek and Maryanna Florek.

Eugenia, known as “Aunt Jean”, was a woman before her time. Her father, Franciszek, passed away at an early age, so Eugenia helped support her mom and younger sister, Lorraine. She worked for Bokum Tool Company and advanced her career during 40 years of service.

Aunt Jean had a passion for travel. She enjoyed many worldwide excursions, making many friends along the way, and kept in contact with them throughout the years. Aunt Jean was an avid reader and especially enjoyed historical literature. She loved to attend symphonies, operas and plays, and learned to play the piano. Aunt Jean was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed quilting, needlework, tatting, embroidery, and knitting. She learned how to weave and spun her own yarn for knitting. She was a member of a quilting and knitting group and enjoyed her friends there immensely. Bowling, and golfing were her favorite pastimes.

Aunt Jean’s love of roses led her to become a member of the Metropolitan Rose Society. She was a rosarian for many years and enjoyed the friendship of her fellow rosarians. Aunt Jean also participated in a line dancing group during her winter retreat in Arizona.

Aunt Jean took care of her mother, Maryanna, and was always there for our family. She had no children of her own, but she was our second mother. Aunt Jean dearly loved her younger sister, Lorraine, and her great and great-great nieces and nephews were so dear to her. Current updates and pictures of the children always made her smile.

She was a kind and generous person, who loved life, and we are so grateful she was part of ours. We’ll miss her deeply, but our many precious memories of her, are our gifts to cherish.

Aunt Jean is survived nieces and nephews, Judith Urbin, Debra (Daniel) Stenger, Michele DeFabio, Thaddeus (Brian Shedd) Owen, and many great-great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Fried Heuser, and sister, Lorraine (the late Carl) Owen.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Regis Catholic Church, Lahser Road at Lincoln, Bloomfield Hills, on Friday (September 21st) at 10:30am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 9:30am. Entombment in Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton Twp., Michigan.

Memorials to The Capuchin Soup Kitchen, 1820 Mt. Elliott Street, Detroit, MI 48207-3485.
