Obituary for Elaine Susan Zatkoff

It is with heavy hearts we inform you of the passing of the Zatkoff family’s matriarch, Elaine Susan Zatkoff. Elaine passed away at home on November 10th, 2020 after a valiant year-long battle with stage four colon cancer, fighting tough until the very end. Elaine spent her entire life as a Michigander, born in Hamtramck on Valentine’s day in 1931 to the late Lyle and Helen Russell. She grew up the middle sibling of the late Richard (Margaret) Russell and the late Doris (Douglas) Wyatt. It was in the halls of Hamtramck High she met the love of her life, Roger Zatkoff, whom she married on August 28, 1951. Elaine and Roger married at the age of 20 when he was a student at the University of Michigan. Elaine worked to support Roger during this time as a mail reader.

One of Elaine’s greatest joys in life was her family and being surrounded by her family. Roger and Elaine went on to have six children: the late Sandra (John) Kogut, Denise (Marc) Staudt, Karen (John Arthur) Steitz, David (Marie) Zatkoff, Gary (Anna) Zatkoff, and the late Brian Zatkoff; eleven grandchildren: James (Caarin) Kogut, CJ (Katie) Kogut, Jonathan (Dani) Zatkoff, Jason Zatkoff, Ashley (Neil) Plamp, Joseph (Cate) Zatkoff, Justin (Melinda) Zatkoff, Kathy (Simon) Rubin, Roger Paul (Megan) Zatkoff, Gillian Staudt, and Jenna Staudt; and thirteen great-grandchildren: Nick Kogut, Alex Kogut, Matt Kogut, Cody Kogut, Benjamin Zatkoff, Chloe Kogut, Henry Zatkoff, Max Zatkoff, Jackson Zatkoff, Brian Rubin, Cameron Kogut, Madeleine Plamp, and Olivia Zatkoff.

Elaine was a proud supporter of the University of Michigan. She attended all Michigan home football games and was always cheering “Go Blue!”. She will also be fondly remembered for helping to support her local parish’s annual giving tree celebration during the holidays. Elaine made the holidays incredibly special for her family with her love of Christmas traditions.

Due to COVID-19 precautions, there will not be a public visitation or public funeral. The family will hold a celebration of life at a later point in time. In lieu of flowers, the Zatkoff family would appreciate memorial contributions be made to the University of Michigan Club of Greater Detroit Scholarship fund via this link: or by adopting a family-in-need’s wish list this holiday season in your community as a way to honor Elaine’s legacy. Family was everything to Elaine and her family was incredibly blessed to have her as their matriarch.
