Obituary for Elaine Haas

Elaine Haas overcame the confinement of Alzheimer’s and regained her life and her memory in heaven on May 13, 2018. She was 86 years old. Elaine was born in December 27, 1931 in Detroit to parents Anna (nee Sampuda) and William Kostelnik.

Elaine grew up in a steel mill family during the depression. She excelled in high school but wanted nothing more than to be a wife to Jack Haas and a mother to the four children they raised together. Jack’s pharmacist career with the Upjohn Company required them to relocate several times, landing them in Jackson, Kalamazoo, Troy, and the Lansing area. Elaine was a multitasker when it came to being a homemaker. She was the original “do it yourselfer” when it came to painting, landscaping, sewing, entertaining, and appliance repair.

The last decade of her life was spent battling Alzheimer’s dementia, which she did with gentle grace. A special thank you is deserved by all her dedicated caretakers.

Her family is terribly sad to lose her but comforted knowing that she no longer lives in a twilight caused by Alzheimer’s.

Elaine is survived by her beloved husband, Jack, loving children, Mike (Gayle) Haas, Diane (Henry) Maier, Bryan (Lisa) Haas, and Joan (Don) Newell. She is the proud grandmother of Matthew, Megan, Christopher, Lauren, Patrick, Mary Beth, Lyndsey, Hayley, Andrew, Douglas, and great-grandmother to Genevieve, Gabriella, Ethan, Zachary, Ryan, Elliott, Aidan, Christian, and Grace. She is also survived by her sister, Patty (Ron) Gural.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas More Church, 4580 Adams Rd., Troy, Friday 11am. Friends my visit at church beginning at 10am. Burial to follow in White Chapel Cemetery, Troy.

In honor of Elaine, memorials appreciated to Alzheimer’s Association, 25200 Telegraph Rd., Ste. 100, Southfield, MI 48033.
