Obituary for Edwin S. Snapke

Edwin S. Snapke of Royal Oak, died September 10, 2011, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was 86 years old. Edwin was born May 16, 1925, in Detroit, to Frances (nee Juckno) and Stanley Snapke. He married Barbara Austin on July 14, 1951.

Edwin started playing saxophone at the age of 10 and was taught by Larry Teal. He played in his teen years at the church next door to his father�s store for three dollars a night. Edwin was a graduate of Cass Tech High School and attended Eastman School of Music. While at Eastman he played with the Rochester Philharmonic and Andre Kostalanets. He played with many bands in Detroit including Graham T. Overgard at Belle Isle, Lowry Clark, Frank Bridge, Ben Young, Phil Brestoff, Mack Pitt, Benny Resh, Irv Lewis, and Lyle Carlyle.

Edwin was on the road with Bill McCune and also played with Tommy Dorsey as well as the Michigan Theater for Billy Exstine and Arthur Godrey. He played the ballrooms, Grandy-Graystone and Vanity as well as playing with the studio bands for WWJ-WXYZ.

Edwin was known as the best tenor, sax, flute, clarinet man in Detroit.

Edwin is survived by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Barbara and children, Susan (Fred) Todd, Thomas (Carol) Snapke and Gerald (Cherie) Snapke. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Caitlin, Freddy, Jessica, and Christy. Edwin is preceded in death by his daughter, Joan Ellen Snapke.

A Memorial Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Rd. (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Saturday, October 1, 2011, at 4pm.
