Obituary for Dr. Naser G. Bodiya

Naser G. Bodiya, of West Bloomfield, died January 25, 2011, in Sterling Heights. He was 90 years old. Dr. Bodiya was born March 29, 1920, in Baghdad, Iraq, to Mirjana (nee Deddeh) and Jirgeose Bodiya.

After arriving in the United States in 1946, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1949 and his MBA in 1950 from the University of Detroit. From 1950-1958 he was a part-time lecturer at U of D. In 1961, he received his PhD from Michigan State University, specializing in economics, marketing and management. While pursuing the doctoral degree, Dr. Bodiya was a research assistant at the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at Michigan State University.

After receiving the doctoral degree, Dr. Bodiya spent a year in Baghdad, Iraq, as a visiting professor at the Jesuit University of Al-Hikma. He was hired by the University of Detroit in 1962, and taught graduate and undergraduate courses in marketing, business policy and strategic planning for more than 30 years, until his retirement in 1992. Dr. Bodiya served the College of Business Administration in a variety of positions, including Assistant Dean for the MBA Program and Chair of Business Faculty. In addition to teaching, Dr. Bodiya participated in many scholastic activities and served as President of Beta Gamma Sigma, University of Detroit Chapter, from 1973-1988.

Along with active participation in academics, Dr. Bodiya had extensive experience in industry in the areas of economics and consumer research, with corporations such as Ford and Chrysler. In 1990, Dr. Bodiya was honored by the Chaldean Federation of America for his untiring willingness and full hearted efforts for service to the Chaldean Community. He served on the Chaldean Federation of America Scholarship Committee for many years and was instrumental in encouraging and supporting educational opportunities for Chaldean youth.

In his spare time, Dr. Bodiya enjoyed camping, gardening, garage sales, playing backgammon, and watching soccer; however, his deepest love was spending time with his family. In his long and active career at the University, Dr. Bodiya touched the lives of many students and was fondly regarded by his colleagues. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Dr. Bodiya is survived by his children, Dale (Joan) Bodiya, Aida (Marc) Butler, Henry (Peggy) Bodiya, and Paul (Carol) Bodiya. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and siblings, Jacob, Rosa Zaiber and Nazhat Jwaida. Dr. Bodiya is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Aldona and siblings, Victoria Murad Al-Shaikh, Saleem and Badie.

Family will receive friends at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Friday 3-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at U of D Mercy College of Business Administration, St. Ignatius Chapel, 4001 W. McNichols Road, Detroit, Saturday 10am. Friends may visit at the chapel beginning at 9:30am. Burial will take place in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
