Obituary for Dorothy Ducker

Dr. Dorothy Goerner Ducker, age 96, passed away peacefully at her home in Birmingham, MI on Sunday, October 25, 2020.

She was born on April 21, 1924, in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of Dr. Alfred and Dr. Margaret Goerner. She spent her childhood in New York City, an avid fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, enjoying relaxing summers outside of the city, memories that she recalled fondly for the remainder of her life.

Dorothy was a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and Long Island College of Medicine, receiving her Medical Doctorate in Pediatrics on June 9, 1949. Like her mother before her, Dorothy’s academic endeavors paved the way for today’s women in medicine.

After a two-year internship at the Brooklyn Hospital, she moved to Detroit for her residency as a Pediatrician at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. It was then that she met her husband, William (“Bill”) Henry Ducker, on a blind date; after several proposals that she found all too romantic, she accepted, after a night shift at the hospital. They were married on January 24, 1953, and would remain in Birmingham, MI for over 60 years. The friendships that were made and maintained during this time remain invaluable.

While raising a family of five rambunctious daughters, Dorothy worked for the Oakland County Health Department, providing care and comfort to her pediatric patients for over 30 years. She was known for her diagnostic talents, leading to her active and ongoing involvement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a hallmark of her career.

She was a very active member of the local Mount Holyoke Alumni Chapter, where she was well known and admired. She also supported numerous professional and charitable organizations throughout her life, remaining dedicated to pediatric health and the wellbeing of those less fortunate.

As the family matriarch and loving mother, grandmother, and friend, she was considered a calming influence and safe harbor in times of distress. Dorothy will be remembered fondly for her sense of humor and gentle fortitude. She treasured her many summers in Pentwater, MI, where she enjoyed reading, visiting with family, and was a reluctant golfer, forever humble in her successes. On her 95th birthday, after blowing out the candles on her cake, Dorothy was asked to make a toast; without missing a beat, she said, “Being 95 is all that jazz.” And so it was.

Dorothy is survived by four daughters, Dodi (John) Bailen of Highland Park, IL; Margie (Bruce) Chew of Kennebunkport, ME; Patty (Michael) Mueller of Hampton Falls, NH; and Joanne (Scott) Ulnick of Birmingham, MI, as well as 18 grandchildren scattered throughout the country. One of the great joys of her life was spending time with her grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William (“Bill”) Ducker; and daughter, Barbara (“Boo”) Chin. Barbara’s husband at the time of her passing, Clifford (“Cliff”) Chin remains a cherished member of the family.

Memorial services will be held in the Spring of 2021. Donations in Dorothy’s memory can be made to the Mount Holyoke Fund ( and Smile Train ( Condolences may be lovingly sent to the family at Lynch & Sons, 1368 North Crooks Road, Clawson, MI 48017.
