Obituary for Donna Powers

Donna Powers died peacefully May 11, 2019. She was 96 years old. Donna was born on October 15, 1922 in Detroit to Kinga (nee Sochalska) and Anthony Panfil. The second eldest daughter of 4 girls, Donna and her sisters were known as the “four little women”.

Donna attended Marygrove College and worked for years at Dictograph Security Company. She was proud of her independence, living at Lafayette Towers downtown as well as her career.

Donna married the love of her life, Michael Powers on April 6, 1973 and their marriage spanned 40 years. Donna was devoted to Mike. She believed in the importance of fresh fruit with breakfast, and would pack beautiful lunches for him so he had healthy meals and not fast food. Photo album pictures of Michael were often captioned, “My great guy!” They traveled extensively, especially to Mexico, entertained and were entertained by their fun-loving circle of friends. They enjoyed golfing, and surrounded themselves with family to complete their full life. They had a “Mad Men” era when champagne toasts and martini cocktail hours started off every gathering including card nights at Jackie and Bob’s home.
Donna’s faith guided her. She and Mike were active, involved members of Queen of Martyrs Church, they were supportive of the school, and also worked to support the charitable efforts of Guest House, Salvation Army (annual bell ringers), and Capuchin Soup Kitchen.

Donna always had such a zest for life!!! Her favorite color, yellow, truly reflected her bright, sunny personality and her “go get it” attitude. Having no children of her own, she took great joy in spending time with her nieces and nephews and later her great nieces and nephews.
Donna is survived by her loving sister, Claudette Rourke and many nieces and nephews including her godson, Mark Chargot and goddaughter, Claudette Rusing. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Michael and her siblings, Aurelia Amnotte and Zenia Lowe.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church, 32340 Pierce Street, Beverly Hills, Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at 10am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 9:30am. Donna will be interred with her husband at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.

Memorials are appreciated to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, 1820 Mt. Elliott Street, Detroit, Michigan 48207.
