Obituary for Donald G. Ducey

Born in Santa Monica, California on December 31, 1929
Passed peacefully at his home in Bloomfield Hills after a brief illness on March 19, 2020 with his daughters by his side.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, wife Maureen (nee Byrne), parents Dr. Edward and Maize Ducey, brother Edward and sister Mary Ellen Pozos.

Survived by daughters Sheila (Tom) Biehl, Sharon, Maura (Brian) Plante and Patsy Castillo, grandchildren Jason Biehl, Bridget (George) Chase, Megan (Jordan) Alvarez, Kelly (Reggie) Smith, Eric (Kelly) Plante, Annie(Tommy) MacBeth and Erin Castillo. Don also had two great grandchildren Jordan Chase and William Plante as well as several nieces and nephews.

Don grew up in the Grand Rapids area where he attended Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School, played football and upon graduation was accepted at the University of Michigan where he earned a B.A. in Political Science. Don also served in the military in the Army Counter Intelligence Corps.

In 1952 Don married the love of his life Maureen and began his career working at Chrysler Corporation as an Adjustment Investigator and Supervisor. While working full time, he entered the University of Detroit Law School and graduated with a JD in 1960.

His law career spanned over 60 years until three weeks before he passed. He began as a defense attorney in worker’s compensation at Alexander Buchanan and Conklin in Detroit. He later was a founding partner in the firm of Conklin, Benham, McLeod, Ducey and Ottaway. Don was well regarded in his field and received numerous awards, however he always put family first. Whenever he received accolades he always began with, “The main reason I stand before you to accept this is because of the incredible woman I married.”

Don and Maureen had four daughters and they settled in Beverly Hills, Michigan where they raised their family. He lovingly referred to his daughters as “my Girls” as if they were one.

Don was an avid U of M football fan. He and Maureen had tickets for Michigan football for over 25 years. He also appreciated the arts and was a season ticket holder at the DSO as well as the Fisher Theatre. He and Maureen enjoyed travel and took a number of trips to Europe as well as spending time at vacation homes in Harbor Springs, Michigan and Naples, Florida with their daughters.

Don was also an avid golfer and life member at Forest Lake Country Club. He actively played until his recent illness including three rounds in Naples last month.

He was a devout Catholic and a parishioner at St. Owens in Bloomfield Township. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to Everest Collegiate High School and Academy (Clarkston) or Angel’s Place (Southfield).

Arrangements are being handled by Lynch and Sons in Clawson. Due to the current health advisories, a celebration of Don’s life will be scheduled at a future date.

-Lovingly submitted by his daughters.
