Obituary for Donald F. Stevens

Donald F. Stevens, died September 11, 2010 at his home in Troy. He was 79 years old. Mr. Stevens was born August 2, 1931, in Saginaw, to Vera (nee Cooper) and Frank Stevens. He served in the U.S. Army from 1949-1953, and was honorably discharged after completing active duty in Korea during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Stevens received his BS and MS from Michigan State University. He taught criminal justice at Kent State University, Wayne State University and the University of Detroit. Mr. Stevens established the first Departments of Public Safety and served as the Director of Public Safety at both Wayne State University and the University of Detroit.

He coached and managed numerous youth baseball teams for Northwest Junior Athletics (NWJA) in Detroit during the 1960's and 1970's. Mr. Stevens was very active for many years in the parent organizations at Gesu Elementary School, Immaculata High School and the University of Detroit High School and Jesuit Academy. He also served as the President of the "Friends of the Library" in Harrison, Michigan.

Mr. Stevens was a lifelong devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers. He loved books and read voraciously, especially history. Most recently, Mr. Stevens spent his summers on Long Lake in Harrison, Michigan and his winters in Avon Park, Florida.

According to his children, Mr. Stevens lived everyday of his life as a reflection of the Biblical verse Matthew 7:12: "In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets." He was the kindest, most compassionate person his family had ever known. He will be deeply missed.

Beloved husband of the late Elizabeth J. Satterlee and former husband of Agnes M. Stevens.
Mr. Stevens is survived by his children Catherine (Stephen) Honka, Lynn (Joseph) Naoum, J. Andrew Stevens, Teresa (Christopher Davis) Stevens, Mark (Sherrie) Stevens, Jerome (Ofelia) Stevens, and Patrick (Celia) Stevens and 16 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Audrey (Bill) Palmer, Sharon (Larry) Brefka, Darlene Filiczkowski and Bonnie Shaw; brother, James (Gretchen) Stevens and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Stevens is preceded in death by his son, Donald A. Stevens, parents, Frank and Vera K. Stevens of Saginaw, and brothers, Kenneth (Evelyn) Stevens, Thomas (Sherry) Stevens and Lyle (Vernita) Stevens.

Please join Don's family at a gathering in celebration of his life on Saturday, October 2, 2010, from 1-5pm at the home of his daughter, Lynn Naoum, 4696 Bentley, Troy, Michigan 48098.
