Obituary for Donald E. Schmaltz

Donald E. Schmaltz died at his home in Southfield May 19, 2016. He was 89 years old. Mr. Schmaltz was born September 11, 1926, in Detroit to Josephine and Frank Schmaltz. Donald proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1944 to 1946. After his military service Donald graduated from Walsh Institute of Accountancy in 1949. Following graduation he worked as a Certified Public Accountant. He was the Founder and Chairman of Schmaltz & Company, P.C. – Certified Public Accountants (now called Clayton & McKervy) and the Director and President of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Financial & Estate Planning Council of Detroit.

Donald had many professional achievements including the Distinguished Service Award from the Lions of Michigan, the Melvin Jones Award from Lions International, the Distinguished Service Award MACPA, the Distinguished Alumni Award from Walsh College, the Professional Man of the Year Award from the Michigan Association of Professions, the U.S. Registry’s Who’s Who in Leading American Executives, the Gabriel Richard Historical Society Phoenix Award, an Honorary Doctors of Law Degree from Walsh College, and the National Registers Who’s Who in Executives & Professionals.

Along with his many professional achievements, Mr. Schmaltz was very involved in the community. He was a longtime member of St. Regis Catholic Church, the Manresa Layman’s Retreat League, Legatus, B.P.O.E, the Houghton Lake Lions Club, and the Houghton Lake Historical Society. He was also a life member of Lions International, the Knights of Columbus, and Red Run Golf Club. He was the Past President of the Gabriel Richard Historical Society, International Visitors Council of Detroit, and Walsh College Alumni Association.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Donald was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Donald is survived by his children, Thomas Schmaltz, Mary Sue Schmaltz, Kathleen (Pat Reardon) Schmaltz, James (the late Karen Orsi) Schmaltz, Margaret Schmaltz, Anita Schmaltz, and Paul (Shannon Ohara) Schmaltz. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Nicholas, Christopher, Natalie, Joseph and Jack, brother, Frank Schmaltz and many nieces and nephews. Donald is preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn Schmaltz, daughter, Joanne Schmaltz and siblings, Arthur Schmaltz, Leola Brown, and Imogene Seurinck.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Wednesday 5-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Regis Catholic Church, 3695 Lincoln Drive, Bloomfield Hills, Thursday 10:30am. Friends may visit at the church beginning at 10am. Burial will follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield. A luncheon is planned for after the burial, details to be announced at the church.
