Obituary for David Berry

David Berry, age 60, of Birmingham passed away Sunday, October 18, 2020. He graduated from Kearsley High School in 1978. He received his B.S. and J.D. from the University of Michigan in 1982 and 1987, respectively. In 1982 he married his high school sweetheart, Janet Griffin. They enjoyed almost 40 years of adventures together – the most fun being their three children. From coaching soccer to watching ski meets to participating in Daddy-Daughter Dance and so much more, David was an involved, supportive, and loving father. He loved golfing, skiing, and Michigan Football.

He started his distinguished legal career in Boston, MA where he was a partner at Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault. In 2002, he transitioned his career into academia when he became a professor and patent clinic director at Cooley Law School and later at Wayne State Law School. Most recently he was the Director of the International Intellectual Property Clinic at University of Detroit Mercy Law School. He was also Of Counsel at Brooks Kushman. He is a past Chair of the State Bar of Michigan Intellectual Property Law Section, was Chair of the Steering Committee of the Michigan Patent Pro Bono Project, and was on the board of directors of the Pro Bono Advisory Council. He approached his work with pro-bono clients as tenaciously as he did all others. In this, and everything else, David believed in the equality of all people and leaves behind a legacy of generosity and kindness.

Preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Brenda Berry, David is survived by his wife, Janet; children, Evan, Graham, and Kendra; and brother, Jim. The family will host friends for a memorial happy hour from 3:00-7:00PM on Friday, October 23, 2020 at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Rd., Clawson, MI 48017.
