Obituary for Constance "Connie" Verbiest

Constance “Connie” Verbiest of Birmingham died peacefully surrounded by her family, September 16, 2020. She was 91 years old. Connie was born May 24, 1929 in Detroit to Mary Catherine (nee Markey) and Michael Edward Downey.

A graduate of Immaculata High School, Connie was the youngest of 8 children. She was the President of Marian High School Mothers Club and very involved in the life of her family. She enjoyed tennis, golf, entertaining, traveling, Northern Michigan, and playing gin with her girlfriends. Connie had friends of all ages and everyone who met her loved her and she loved them.

A woman of great faith, Connie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Connie is survived by her daughters, Julie (Daniel) Schmidt and Carol (Brian) Roney and grandchildren, Sara, Michael (Betsy) Schmidt, Matthew (Tracy) Schmidt, Catherine (Michael La Plante) Roney, Brian (Hanna Leisie) Roney, and Michael Roney. She is also survived by 23 nieces and nephews. Connie is preceded in death by her beloved husband, H. Richard “Slip” Verbiest, her siblings, Marian McCombs, Norman Downey, Ruth Kleven, Virginia Mitchell, William Downey, Doris Moran, and John Downey.

A Memorial Mass will be held at Holy Name Catholic Church, 630 Harmon Street, Birmingham, Monday, September 21st at 10am. Serving as Honor Guard for Connie will be her dearest friends, Loretta Nagle, Beverly Decker, Mary Scrafano, and Therese Mayer. A Committal Service will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Birmingham.
