Obituary for Colleen H. Cottrell

Colleen H. Cottrell of West Bloomfield, died June 1, 2011, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was 74 years old. Colleen was born March 21, 1937, in Detroit, to Anna (nee Starr) and Anthony Walenty. Colleen was proud of her Irish-Polish Heritage. She was a wonderful and loving mother of seven children and the proud grandmother of nine. She enjoyed family vacations by lakes and oceans, and especially loved Hilton Head Island. Colleen loved the summers when she and her husband George opened up the pool, their hearts, and their refrigerator to their children, grandchildren, and many friends.

Colleen was a wonderful homemaker for her family, always cooking, cleaning, folding laundry, helping with homework, and parenting with patient love. As a mother, she enjoyed life and was a celebrator of all occasions. Birthdays were at the top of her list. Colleen was a wonderful sister and so enjoyed all of her brothers and sisters.

Colleen was a loving and caring mother, mentor, teacher, and most of all a best friend to her children. Her faith in God was strong and she set a solid example in all things for her kids. Her children would like to thank their father George for taking such good care of their mother during her illness. Colleen was a graceful lady who never complained about her struggles in her illness. She once wrote I think I am handling this very bravely. You did Mom! We are so proud of you and love you so much, and we miss you already. Thank You Mom!

Colleen is survived by her beloved husband, George; children, Barbara (Ken Bomberski) Cottrell, Kevin (Teri) Cottrell, Patrick (Carrie) Cottrell, Colleen (Vince) Ashley, Maureen (Dave) Pagnucco, Joseph Cottrell, and Terry (Jen) Cottrell; grandchildren, Tara, Tony, Tricia, D.J., Maria, Julia, Celia, Sam, and Sophia. Also survived by her siblings, Sr. Barbara Walenty, M.M., Donald Walenty, and Patrick Walenty. Colleen is preceded in death by her siblings, John Walenty, Gloria Barlage, and Tom Walenty.
