Obituary for Colleen Carroll

Colleen Carroll of Troy died peacefully April 28, 2018. She was 91 years old. Colleen was born August 31, 1926 in Windsor, Ontario to Gertrude (nee Martin) and Stephen Farrell.

Beloved wife of the late Albert “Sandy” Carroll. Survived by her daughter, Martha Carroll McCowin (Steve) of Salt Lake City, Utah; sister-in-law Nancy Farrell (Stephen); nieces Kate Farrell Yapjoco (Alex), and Liza Farrell Toulouse; great-nephew Max Toulouse and great-niece Madison Toulouse; many cousins, especially Anne Marie Rondot Kersey (Monty), Jim Rondot, and Sue Stecker; Godson Terry O'Donnell; and many dear friends.

Born in Windsor, Ontario, Colleen graduated from Walkerville Collegiate with a Commercial Certificate at age 17. Shortly after, she started work at Walsh Advertising and soon became secretary to the vice president. Several years later she met her beloved Albert “Sandy” Carroll there. They were married on February 26, 1949.

While relishing her role as wife and mother, Colleen became a very active parishioner at Holy Name Catholic Church in Birmingham, which became her home and extended family for close to the last 60 years. She spearheaded the parish Women’s Council and its “Art & Antiques” fundraiser for many years. She was honored to be the only woman selected to serve on Cardinal Dearden’s renovation committee for the Archdiocese of Detroit’s Blessed Sacrament Cathedral. For the last 15 years, she served as a trustee of the Father Robert E. Burke Foundation.

In the wider community, Colleen belonged to Church Women United, the Mary Chase Stratton chapter of Questers, and was a long-time member of the Birmingham Musicale and led the Sing-Along group that made monthly visits to the St. Elizabeth Briarbank seniors’ residence and other homes. In addition, she had a small but successful home organizing business known as Colleen’s Clutter Control.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Catholic Church, 630 Harmon Street, Birmingham, Friday, May 4th at 10am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 9:30am.

Memorials appreciated to Angela Hospice, 14100 Newburgh Rd, Livonia, Michigan 48154.
