Obituary for Chuck E. Palmer

Charles Edward Palmer “Chuck”, of Clawson died surrounded by his family on January 17, 2018. He was 86 years old. Chuck was born January 29, 1931 in Dukedom, Kentucky to parents Otis L. and Lena Palmer.

Chuck moved to Michigan with his father and brother in 1939 and graduated from Royal Oak High School, in 1949. He married Jacqueline “Jackie” Tolbert in 1951 and together they raised six children, Terri, Lauri, David, Heidi, Peggi, and Mysti. He was drafted and proudly served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, stationed in Anchorage, Alaska.

The Palmer family moved to Clawson, Michigan in 1954, where he was a resident for 57 years. Professionally, Chuck was a carpenter, contractor and eventually president of Palmer Custom Builders, Inc. from 1953 to 1997. He served his community in many ways during his life in Clawson, including, Clawson PTA officer, president and council member, March of Dimes Community Chair, member of Clawson Lion’s Club, member of Clawson Optimist Club, member of Clawson Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Clawson City Council from 1967-69 and 1981-1990, Clawson Man of the Year in 1968, and Mayor of Clawson from 1969-77. He was an active member of Michigan Municipal League during term of mayor, president of Michigan Municipal League from 1976-77, member of Troy Community Coalition, and Oakland County Commissioner from 1996-2011.

When Chuck had spare time, he enjoyed golfing, gardening, wood working, and spending time on the ocean in Florida with family and friends. He was an active member of the Church of Christ his entire life.

Chuck’s beloved wife Jackie died in 1995. He married Fay Boucher in 1997. They lived in Oxford and Lapeer from 2011-2018 as Chuck battled Parkinson Disease. Fay and Chuck’s children stood by his side every step of the way.

He will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew him.

Chuck is survived by his beloved wife, Fay Boucher Palmer, loving children, Terri (Costas) Cafcalas, Lauri Palmer, David (Carolyn) Palmer, Heidi (Jim) Lytle, Peggi (Tim) Kern, and Mysti Palmer, step-children, Tim (Jo) Boucher, Steve Boucher, John Boucher, and Kristi (Brad) Rundell, siblings, Bill (the late Henrietta) Palmer, Mary (David) Wyett, Larry (Stella) Palmer, and Steve (Jayme) Palmer. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Chuck is preceded in death by his wife, Jackie Palmer, parents, Otis and Lena Palmer, step-mother, Georgia “Pauline” Palmer, and Fay’s son, Jim Boucher.

A funeral service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Rd. (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) on Monday at 11am. Friends may visit with the family Sunday from 2-8pm. Burial will follow at White Chapel Cemetery, Troy.
