Obituary for Charles J. Taunt

Charles J. “Chuck” Taunt of Bloomfield Village, Michigan passed away peacefully on March 13, 2019. He was 70 years old. Chuck was born January 17, 1949 to the late Joseph and Elsie Taunt. He is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Cheri and his loving children, Charles J. “Chip” (Katie) Taunt, Jr.; Sarah (Jim) Russell; Daniel (Erika) Hart; Matthew (Meredith) Taunt and Jay Taunt. He will be deeply missed by his adoring grandchildren CJ, Drew, Evan, Will, Olivia, Ellie, Macklin, Cameron; Mason and Mallory. He is also survived by his dear sisters Rose Borton and Marge Carlisle; brothers Mike (Pam) and Larry (Judy), mother-in-law Jeanne Hazard, and sisters-in-law Carol (Alan) Potocki and Cynthia (Tom) Carter. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, colleagues and dear friends. Chuck was preceded in death by his brother Bruce.

Chuck attended Brother Rice High School, Michigan State University and Detroit College of Law. Guided by his entrepreneurial spirit Chuck entered the legal field as a solo practitioner and enjoyed a successful law practice for 45 years. He was admitted to practice in the State of Michigan, U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. He served as a Panel Trustee for the United States Bankruptcy Court for more than 30 years and held memberships in both state and federal bar associations. He also served as a Special Investigator and Volunteer Arbitrator for the Attorney Grievance Commission, Case Evaluator for Oakland County Circuit Court, was appointed Receiver in many state and federal court cases, and speaker at numerous conferences in the areas of asset protection, bankruptcy and estate planning. Chuck loved mentoring young lawyers and was known by his legal peers for his kindness, civility and high ethical standards.

Always a strong supporter of Catholic education, Chuck's involvement with Brother Rice High School spanned decades. He served as an officer for the Dads' Club, President of the Alumni Association, Chairman and member of the Board of Directors and General Counsel for the school. He was honored by Brother Rice as a Distinguished Alumni and inducted into the Hall of Fame. In recent years he became involved with Saint Michael's Academy in Petoskey as Legal Counsel, Treasurer and member of the Board of Directors.

Although his professional and civic accomplishments were many, his favorite times were spent with family at his vacation home in Harbor Springs or as an exuberant fan at sporting events for grandchildren's hockey, lacrosse, baseball, football, soccer, swimming and gymnastics competitions. Chuck had many adventurous hobbies; he was a downhill skier, long-distance cyclist, sail boat and power boat captain, and his favorite - piloting his Cirrus airplane.

Chuck will always be remembered for his positive attitude and fighting spirit in all things, especially in his battle for life. When diagnosed with cancer Chuck adopted the motto of 'Make this body great again' (MTBGA) and embarked on the most aggressive treatments available. For two years he valiantly endured chemo and countless medical procedures and was proud of the fact that he flew his personal plane to and from Mayo Clinic for treatments. He fought his final battle with courage, dignity and a determination to never quit.

Family will receive friends at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 North Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) in Clawson on Monday, March 18th 3-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Regis Catholic Church, 3695 Lincoln Drive, Bloomfield Hills, Tuesday, March 19th at 10:30am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10am. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.

Memorial tributes are requested to the Taunt Family Foundation for Catholic High School Scholarships, 7101 Lasher Road, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan 48301 or to Saint Michael's Academy, c/o Jim Hatch, 2225 Summit Park Drive, Petoskey, Michigan 49770.
