Obituary for Chandra Cecilia Allen

Chandra Cecilia Allen, 80, of Bloomfield Hills, MI passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 3, 2016 following a courageous battle with brain cancer. Her husband of 58 years, Jack B. Allen, was by her side. She had been in hospice care at the home of her daughter Kelly Allen and son-in-law John Tower of Rochester Hills, MI, always surrounded by the love of family and friends.

Chandra was born on October 9, 1935 in Chicago to the late Elayne and Wellington “Duke” Camp. She graduated from Chicago’s Immaculata High School and Mundelein College (now part of Loyola University). Chandra had an exciting and unique childhood as a result of her father’s management career in Chicago’s nightclub scene in the 1940’s and 1950’s, and shared her father’s friendships with entertainment icons of the era including Bob Hope, Tony Bennett, Danny Thomas, Sammy Davis Jr., Jimmy Durante, Sophie Tucker and Dean Martin. This lively upbringing developed Chandra’s panache for good fun and vibrant conversation.

Chandra and Jack married on February 15, 1958. Both only children, they wanted a large family and were blessed with 10 children. As Jack’s career moved the family from Chicago to New York, to Birmingham, MI and to Westport, CT, Chandra was universally admired for balancing and managing the needs of her large family with grace and ease. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome and special at The Allen household; indeed her neighbors and many friends were all part of the extended Allen family. Chandra never missed a birthday, baptism, communion or confirmation, and she tirelessly supported her children, grandchildren and extended family in all their endeavors -- attending countless sporting events and performances.

Chandra was passionate about raising her children in the Catholic faith and lived her life as a shining example of that faith. She also maintained special relationships with all of parishes the Allen family joined over the years -- St. Joseph’s in Wilmette, IL, St. Regis in Birmingham, MI, Assumption and St. Luke’s in Westport, CT, and her final home parish, her beloved St. Hugo of the Hills.

She loved to dance, had a passion for writing and was a masterful conversationalist who enjoyed hosting large gatherings for family and friends. Love and devotion to her family, her friends, her community and her faith always took priority in Chandra’s life.

Mrs. Allen is survived by her 10 children, Kelly (John Tower) Allen, Joseph (Nancy) Allen, James Allen, Michael (Patricia) Allen, Thomas (Kimberly) Allen, Peter (Nancy) Allen, Daniel (Amy) Allen, Timothy Allen, David (Nancy) Allen, Elaine (Jesse) Daignault also 24 grandchildren: Nicholas Tower, Christopher Tower, Jessica Allen, Kristin Allen, Kevin Allen, Patrick Allen, Jameson Allen, Tyler Greenfield, Aleyshia Greenfield, Mackenzie Allen, Jack Allen II, Ian Allen, Michael Allen II, Caroline Allen. Julia Allen, Bryan(Jessica) Allen, Bradley Allen, Riley Allen, Duke Allen, Isabella Allen, Sarah Allen, Zachary Allen, Jackson Daignault, Mia Daignault and one great grandchild, Nolan Allen.

Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Thursday, April 7th, 3-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Hugo of the Hills, 2215 Opdyke Rd. Bloomfield Hills, Friday, April 8th at 10am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 9:30am. Father Joseph Grimaldi will be officiating.
