Obituary for Cathy L. LaBruzzy

Cathy LaBruzzy, aged 48 (or, twenty-five, if you were to ask her yourself), passed away after a long and strenuous battle with an aggressive form of cancer. When she was originally diagnosed, Cathy was given three months to live, though she must have decided that that wasn’t nearly enough time. In life, Cathy was never stubborn or difficult, but she was a fighter, and if defying both fate and a doctor’s words meant that she could live another year, so be it.

Cathy LaBruzzy was born on September 3rd, 1968 to her loving parents Richard and Christine Colpaert. She grew up with two sisters, their names Carol and Carrie. Cathy had a wonderful childhood and lived to tell her hilarious tales of misadventure and mischief. Cathy never lost her youthful spark as she got older. She graduated from Walsh College with a degree in accounting. If you were to ask her, she would tell you she wasn’t a very good accountant and it became clear that this wasn’t the path she was destined to take.

Cathy LaBruzzy met her soulmate Jeff one summer, and it was clear that the two of them were meant to be together. Their relationship blossomed into something so wonderful that they decided they had to spend the rest of their lives together, and were married October 23, 1993. Cathy found her calling in being a homemaker and raised three children who will love her endlessly and always cherish her as their mother. Cathy considers her biggest accomplishment to be building a life with her children and husband. Cathy’s love and compassion for her family was unmatched and truly remarkable.

Cathy lived out her life very happily, making many friends along the way. People who met her could tell endless stories about how funny she was, or how much laughter she brought to the people around her. Cathy loved to spend time on the shores of Hubbard Lake, where she might sit by the bonfire, relax on the boat, or enjoy swimming or floating in the lake. Cathy had been known to crack open a bottle of wine in celebration of a wonderful day. Cathy always focused on happy times, no matter what life threw at her. Cathy’s heart and her ability to love to such a full extent is truly the legacy that she leaves behind.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Jeff LaBruzzy, and her loving children, Lexi, Charlie, and Tommy LaBruzzy. She is also survived by her parents, Richard and Christine Colpaert, her dear sisters, Carol Berman and Carrie (Pete) Cassano, and her proud in-laws, Russell and Karen LaBruzzy.

If you want to join us to celebrate and commemorate a life lived so fully, so wonderfully, and so beautifully, you can visit Cathy and her family at her visitation, which will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Rd. (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Tuesday 3-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Catholic Church, 630 Harmon, Birmingham, Wednesday 10am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 9:30am.

In memory of Cathy, donations may be made to Allie's Angels, 33717 Woodward Avenue #276, Birmingham, Michigan 48009.

“Rarely found and beautiful beyond measure.”
