Obituary for Bruce Nelson

Bruce Nelson, age 93, died peacefully at his home in Bloomfield Township on April 10, 2020. He was born in Detroit on March 4, 1927 to Cecille (Welvert) and Bert Nelson, who raised him along with his beloved younger brothers, Tom and Bill, in Dearborn. Bruce was an altar boy, caddie, sailor (Navy, Big Lake and any large body of water where he could put in his boat), scholar, engineer, financial manager and lawyer. He was also frequently a mechanic, plumber and electrician. At his workbench, with a cigar in his mouth, he could solve any problem. He loved life at the cottage any time of year and fall football Saturdays in Ann Arbor (Go Blue). Most of all, he loved his wife and forever sweetheart, Shirley, who pre-deceased him in 2019. They travelled across Europe, the Holy Land, Alaska and to the grandkids’ sports events in Brighton, Holly, Trotwood, Tallahassee and Jacksonville.

Bruce loved God with all his heart and attended mass daily. On one occasion, he risked life and limb to bring the Eucharist to Shirley. He emptied himself in love and devotion to his children, Mary Anne Nelson, Richard (deceased), Jim (Lisa) Nelson, Marilyn (Richard) Powers, Jeannie (Keith Karbum) Nelson and Robert (deceased); his 10 grandchildren, Richard Leon (Michelle), Wade Spears, Andrew Nelson, Marissa Nelson, Jennifer Munson (Michael), Matthew Powers, Amelia Powers, Richard Powers, David Powers (Brittany), Carilyn Powers and Josh Nelson; and his 13 great-grandchildren, Alex Leon, Ben Leon, Chris Leon, Kaylee Munson, Mackenzie Munson, Carter Munson, Cameron Powers, Jordyn Powers, Kherah Powers, Giada Powers, Stella Powers and Isla Powers. We will remember him always.

A Memorial mass and celebration will be scheduled in the future at St Regis Catholic Church.

Memorials appreciated to Right-to-Life.
